The Technical University of Brandenburg ( THB ) is a state university of applied sciences in Brandenburg an der Havel . It was founded in 1992 as the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences ( FHB ), making the city of Brandenburg a university town for the first time. The grounds of the Technical University of Brandenburg are located on a campus in the Altstadt district , a former barracks complex from the 19th century. Around 2650 students are looked after by around 260 employees at the university. The focus of the courses in three subject areas is concentrated on the so-called MINT subjects .

history

The cuirassier barracks in Brandenburg around 1881

The campus of the Technical University was built on the site of a former cuirassier regiment of the Royal Prussian Army or the German Army . The historic university building with a red brick facade was built for the cuirassier regiment "Emperor Nicholas I of Russia" (Brandenburg) No. 6 . In the course of an army expansion, a government resolution was passed in 1874 to build several barracks in Brandenburg an der Havel. The new buildings were financed with 2,275,000  marks from the French reparations payments of 5 billion gold francs after the Franco-German War .

Early construction phase on the barracks in 1877

Construction on the new cuirassier barracks began in the summer of 1877. The construction of the facility was completed within four years and handed over on April 1, 1881. The architectural model was the Potsdam hussar barracks . The newly built facility covered an area of around nine hectares . 13,570 square meters of the area were built on. There was a riding arena with a length of 47 meters and 673 meters of stables for a total of 742 horses. The soldiers' quarters were on Magdeburger Strasse. This building housed kitchens, pantries, dining rooms and bathrooms in the basement. Clothing, equipment rooms and workshops were located under the roof. There were also accommodations for six officer's and seventeen sergeant's families.

After varied military and civilian use, from 1962 officer students from the officers' college of the air forces / air defense Franz Mehring of the National People's Army of the GDR were trained as helicopter drivers on the premises. In the course of their training, the officers were able to acquire the academic degree of graduate engineer . After the end of the GDR , the barracks were converted into civilian use. With the establishment of the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences, the site became a civilian educational facility.

University building in Kirchhofstrasse used in the founding phase; former Brennaborwerk

In October 1991 the state of Brandenburg decided to set up and found five technical colleges. In addition to the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences, these were the universities of applied sciences in Potsdam , Eberswalde , Wildau , Cottbus and Senftenberg . The Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences was officially founded on April 13, 1992. It was historically the first university in the Havel city. Up until that point in time, a medical college was the highest educational institution in Brandenburg an der Havel. For the 1992/93 winter semester , 62 students enrolled in the courses in mechanical engineering , business administration and applied computer science . They were initially taught by five professors. In the first few years, due to the upcoming renovation and renovation measures on the former barracks area, the university used the premises of the listed former Brennaborwerk in Kirchhofstrasse in Brandenburg Neustadt , which was the location of the textile factory for Brandenburg children's clothing (Braki) for decades after the Second World War . From 1993 onwards, so-called distance learning bridging courses in the mechanical engineering course were offered to graduates from technical schools in the GDR. They were able to complete the diploma course in a shortened course .

From 1993, on the campus of the university renovated the historic building and complemented by modern new buildings. The first graduate of the university received his diploma in August 1994. In October 1996, the renovation and reconstruction of the large barracks building into the new main building of the university was completed, after which the university moved from Kirchhofstrasse to the campus. The location in Kirchhofstrasse was completely given up. Also in October 1996 the ceremonial handover of the building of the university library in the former riding stables of the barracks took place. A year later the newly built cafeteria and the building of the IT department were handed over. The former riding arena was expanded into an auditorium maximum by September 2006 .

The founding rector of the university was the future mayor of the city, Helmut Schmidt . He headed the college from 1992 to 1998. His successor was Werner Hofacker in January 1999 . He was followed by Rainer Janisch and Hans Georg Helmstädter from 2001 to 2006 , who remained in office from 2007 to 2013. From 2013 to 2019, Burghilde Wieneke-Toutaoui was the first female president of the university. On July 22, 2015, the Ministry of Science of the State of Brandenburg approved plans to rename the University of Applied Sciences Brandenburg University of Technology. This renaming took place on March 1, 2016. Andreas Wilms has been President of the university since April 1, 2019 .

University structure

Center for Computer Science and Media

Institutionally, the Brandenburg University of Technology is structured into the three faculties of computer science and digital media , technology and economics . A large part of the central institutions typical of a university are grouped together in so-called centers at the FHB. In addition to the student secretariat, there is, for example, a center for information, media and communication, which includes the university library of the Technical University of Brandenburg , the university printer and the computer center . The Language Center and the International Office are organized in the Center for International Affairs and Languages . This center carries out, for example, the Coaching International project, which is intended to promote or support foreign university students and graduates entering the job market. The center for founding and transfer, which is supposed to establish and maintain connections between the university and business enterprises, is, for example, the contact point for prospective entrepreneurs among students and graduates. The center enables access to industry-specific networks and, if necessary, funding . In addition, it is intended to support science and research, for example by providing advice on regulating cooperation in research and development contracts or the search for funding opportunities, and helping to make university resources accessible to companies. The center awards the university's innovation prize annually. The so-called Career Service is a center for studies and careers, which aims to support students in gaining additional qualifications and starting their careers. In addition to the Center for International Affairs and Languages, he is also involved in the Coaching International project. A center for permeability and diversity was founded at the Technical University to promote and support part-time studies.

The departments of the university are also housed in so-called centers. In these cases, these centers are the corresponding university buildings for the individual departments with their entire infrastructure . The main building and the historical barracks are the economic center, while the computer science and digital media department is housed in the computer science and media center and the technology department is housed in the engineering center.

The Technical University has a presence position in Pritzwalk in the Prignitz district . The facility serves to support the structurally weak educational and economic region in the north-west of the state. The presence office was opened in 2005. The establishment was initiated by the growth core of the Autobahn triangle Wittstock / Dosse e. V., which is also involved in the financing. Since 2007, additional funds from the European Social Fund and the State of Brandenburg have been used. Academic training in the Prignitz region, for example, is coordinated via the presence office.

The official journal of the Technical University of Brandenburg is INFOCUS . This is published via the university's press office. The magazine first appeared in 1994.

Organs and bodies

The head of the university has been President Andreas Wilms, formerly Vice President for Teaching and International Affairs at THB, since April 1, 2019. He is represented by Vice President for Teaching and International Affairs Rolf Socher and Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer Gerald Kell. The university administration is headed by the Chancellor. Since 2010 this is Steffen Kissinger. The administration is structured in three departments, a staff unit and a staff area.

The eleven-member Senate of the Technical University consists of six professors, two students, two academic employees and one other employee. Thus there is basically a fixed majority of the university lecturers in this body. The tasks of the Senate are defined by the Brandenburg University Act. These are the enactment and amendment of the constitution, enactment and amendment of other statutes of the university, insofar as the competence of the faculties is not justified, election and deselection of the president, the supervision of the president, in particular with regard to the annual report, the discharge of the president as well as in Referring to the draft budget. Furthermore, the Senate is responsible for decisions on fundamental questions of teaching, research, studies and examinations as well as the promotion of young academics, the responsibility for decisions on the university's development plan and on the proposals of the departments for the appointment of university lecturers and the responsibility to comment on the statutes of the departments. The chairman of the Senate is Thomas Kern .

The three departments are each headed by a dean . In January 2015 the deans in the Department of Computer Science and Media were Susanne Busse , in the Department of Technology Christian Zehner and in the Department of Business Christian Mieke . The deans are responsible for the organization of studies and examinations and the coordination of research and teaching in their departments. The organs of student self-administration at the Technical University of Brandenburg are the General Student Committee (AStA) and the Student Parliament (Stupa). The student parliament, as the highest decision-making body of the student body, has 17 members elected by and from the student body.

Education

A total of 2614 students were enrolled at the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences in the 2015/16 winter semester. 845 university students were female, which corresponds to a rate of 32.2 percent. The proportion of foreign students at the university was 12.3 percent with an absolute 321 students. At the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences it was regularly between seven and ten percent. The technical college students were looked after by 240 employees of the university, of whom 67 were professors, 74 scientific and 99 non-scientific employees. With 9 female professors, the proportion of women was 13.4 percent. It was 48.6 percent for academic staff and 49.5 percent for non-academic staff. Two of the professorships were endowed professorships .

courses

In 2014, the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences offered 20 courses in the three departments of computer science and media, technology and economics. These were Applied Computer Science, Business Administration, computer science, electronics , mechatronics / automation systems, medical computer science , microsystems technology and optical technologies, business computer science , Computer Aided Robust engineering, digital media, energy efficiency Technical Systems, Security Management and Technology and Innovation Management. Degrees to be acquired at the Technical University of Brandenburg are the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Engineering and the Master of Science or the Master of Engineering. In the 1990s and 2000s, the diploma with the addition of brackets (FH) was offered, but was abolished as part of the Bologna Process . Only a few courses of study at the university are restricted by a local numerus clausus . In individual non-admission courses, however, other requirements that are independent of a grade average, such as professional experience, are required for any enrollment.

At the Technical University of Brandenburg there are various study formats such as face-to-face, online or distance learning . Since 2001, the university has been a member of the Virtual University of Applied Sciences, which is intended to optimize the use of online courses, and in 2004 it was a founding member of the Distance Learning University Association, which supports and accompanies members in the development of distance learning content.

Study requirements

Formal university entrance qualifications are the general university entrance qualification , the subject-specific university entrance qualification and the technical college entrance qualification . According to the Brandenburg Higher Education Act, a secondary school qualification or the technical college entrance qualification including suitable vocational training and at least two years of professional experience or a master craftsman's certificate or equivalent in a suitable profession are alternative university entrance qualifications. The range of courses and the study formats should be based on the different needs of prospective students with and without a technical college entrance qualification or high school diploma. In this way, interested parties who have an alternative university entrance qualification should also be able to start studying at the university of applied sciences. In 2010, against this background, a project "Seeing further - further training - further coming" was founded.

Semester fees

For the summer semester 2019, the university charged a semester fee of 253.20 euros per student. This sum includes a re-registration or enrollment fee of 51 euros, a contribution to the Studentenwerk Potsdam of 50 euros, 10 euros for the student body per student for the general student committee and the cost of the semester ticket of 142.20 euros. Tuition fees are not charged at public universities in the state of Brandenburg. The semester ticket of the Technical University of Brandenburg is valid for one half-year (April to September or October to March) and in the entire tariff area of the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association . In addition, journeys on the regional express line of Deutsche Bahn to Magdeburg are included. Costs that differ from the general fees are charged in three subjects. For example, Master's students in Security Management have to pay an additional usage fee of 250 euros and students of the part-time Bachelor in Business Administration of 500 euros per semester, while students of Media Informatics, as this is an online course, and the part-time Bachelor in Business Administration do not have a semester ticket. Scholarship holders of the German Academic Exchange Service are generally exempt from re-registration or matriculation fees and only have to pay the fees for the Studentenwerk, the AStA and the semester ticket.

Infrastructure

Campus map

Since the abandonment of premises in Kirchhofstrasse, the university has been completely housed on the campus south of Magdeburger Strasse and north of Vereinsstrasse. The individual departments have separate buildings, so-called centers, with seminar rooms, lecture halls and laboratories .

main building

Main building of the university; Economic center

The economic science center is located in the five-wing main building. This main building is part of a complex architectural monument, cuirassier barracks, consisting of several individual structures . The building, like a bar, forms the northern end of the campus to Magdeburger Straße. The longitudinal axis of the building is at an angle of 43 degrees to the road. The longitudinal axis is oriented from northeast to southwest. The building has a total length of around 171 meters. Stylistically, the building of the barracks belongs to historicism , more precisely to neo-Gothic . It was built from red bricks and is unplastered.

The building has a central wing with two side wings on each side . The middle wing has four floors. In the north-west facade on the street side there is a central projection in which the main portal is located. This is designed in an arched segment and is located in a larger, ogival panel . In addition to this main entrance to the building, there are several side entrances. The windows of the wing as well as the entire building are segmented arched windows in the basement and in the cellar , and pointed arched windows on the upper floors. The arrangement of two windows next to one another, and also three windows on the top floor, is typical. Furthermore, there are ox-eyes as upper closures, for example in areas of stairwells . For example, also in the central projection. Narrow building projections emerge over the corners over the entire height of the north-west facade of the central wing. These protrusions are at an angle of 45 degrees to the facade. Windows and entrances were also incorporated into these. The entrances are located in further protrusions, so-called luminaires, and have a crenellated crown . Cantilevered battlements carried by consoles can also be found on the entire upper end of the central wing to the roof. Building corners were crowned with small, tower-like tabs as decorative elements. The south-east facade of the central building facing the campus is a little simpler. Instead of a central one, there are two side elevations. The risalites of the former barracks were originally pointed towers covered with tent roofs . The roof of the central wing was changed in design in the course of the renovation. Since then there has been a roof terrace . The former towers were covered flat after the roof trusses had been removed , which made them projections. Four glass structures were installed as skylights on the modern roof structure .

The side wings adjoining the central wing are three-story. Design details are a simple cornice that encircles the entire building between the basement, the first and second floors and an eaves cornice . The roof is a gable roof . In this there are gable dormers with gable ears and gable riders as window openings. These building wings are followed by further side wings, which form the end of the building on both sides. These are at an angle of around 43 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the building. Like the central wing, they have four floors. In these wings of the building, there are also two side elevations in the facades on their long sides and small central elevations in the side facades. The central projections , in which there are staircases, have conspicuous stepped gables as upper ends .

In addition to seminar and lecture rooms, primarily for economic subjects, this barracks building also houses the administration of the university. Rooms in the basement are used by a student club.

Riding stables / library

The university library is housed in the former riding stables

In addition to the main building, there are other historical and listed buildings on the campus. The university library and an event hall, the knight's hall, are housed in the former stables of the barracks. When looking from the main building, he is facing it on the left. It is two-story and consists of two wings at right angles to each other. It is also made of red bricks and has no plaster. The larger northwest wing has two side projections, the gables of which have tabs and ears. The northeastern risalit continues in the northeast wing. The windows on the ground floor are mostly plain rectangular windows and segment arch windows on the upper floor. Only in the risalits are there large pointed arch windows. A cornice made of bricks can be found under the eaves of the building. Inside, the floors are separated by a cross-vaulted ceiling.

Library hall with old cross vaulted ceiling

The university's library was founded in 1992 at the same time as the university. Since 1996 she has been housed in the former riding stables. The university library has an inventory of over 110,000 volumes. During the renovation and reconstruction work on the riding stables in the 1990s, access to the university library was made barrier-free, making it possible to use it for wheelchair users . In the course of the renaming of the university in 2016, the name of the university library was also changed. In the foyer of the university library regularly scientific or artistic exhibitions.

Riding hall / auditorium maximum

The Audimax: the former riding hall of the barracks

The auditorium maximum, the university's largest lecture hall, was housed in the former barracks riding hall, which is also under monument protection. It is located southeast of the riding stable. The riding arena is a single-wing, one-story building. It also consists of unplastered red brickwork. Decorative details are a central and two side projections with gable tabs and ears and an eaves cornice. Most of the windows are pointed arches. The former segmental arched entrances to the building are located in the central elevation to the southwest and northeast.

Auditorium maximum

Between 2003 and 2006 the riding arena was rebuilt and renovated. The architect was Reiner Becker. A new main entrance was created in a glass body protruding from the masonry on the northwest side. To the southeast, the building was extended by a steel body that also protruded from the masonry. A so-called telescopic stage was built into the hall . As a lecture hall, the Audimax can accommodate 300 people. The stage can be retracted for events, creating space for up to 520 guests. In 2008 the architects' office was awarded the BDA prize for its implementation.

More buildings

Engineering center

A modern new building was built for the Center for Information Technology and Media, which forms a building complex with the riding stables. The two-wing building was designed in such a way that it forms a right angle opposite the library building, so that both buildings together form a rectangle. Instead of red, yellow clinker bricks were used for the facade design. The engineering science center opposite to the southwest was designed in a similar architectural style. In addition to yellow bricks, large glass fronts dominate the largely unadorned buildings. The cafeteria southeast of the engineering center is also a stylistically similar new building. There are also two laboratory buildings in the east, a three-story student residence consisting of two buildings in the west and sports facilities including a sports hall and another historic barracks building in the south of the campus. The red brick enclosure of the former barracks facing Magdeburger Strasse with the main gate is, like the old buildings, also part of the monument.

Surroundings

Another building of the Cuirassier Barracks: a branch of the State Audit Office

The area around the university campus is used in various ways. The areas opposite the university, north Magdeburger Strasse and southern Vereinsstrasse, are residential quarters, while in the area between the two streets next to the university there are only public authorities . These are housed in a large number of other former barracks buildings. In the immediate western vicinity, for example, the tax office , the Brandenburg district court , the state education office , a branch of the property and construction office and the land registry in former barracks of the Wehrmacht are attached to the university campus. In addition to the technical college buildings, the architectural monument of the cuirassier barracks includes a building used by the Brandenburg State Audit Office at the portal on Magdeburger Strasse. In a further listed barracks east the UAS which an infantry barracks belonged which are labor court Brandenburg and the State Office regulating open property issues housed. Other authorities in this area are the city's central police station and the Brandenburg Higher Regional Court . The residential area in the area of northern Magdeburger Strasse opposite the Technical University was set up in a former artillery barracks complex, which is also listed as a historical monument . Also on this side of the street is the listed former officers' mess of the cuirassiers, which is operated by the youth culture factory as a culture house.

Connection

To the west of the campus, federal highways 1 and 102 pass in the immediate vicinity on the so-called center ring. Behind this bypass road is the Brandenburg-Altstadt train station , a regional train station that is connected to the Brandenburg central train station and Rathenow train station via the former Brandenburg city railway . There is a rarely used bus stop in front of the train station. The tram and bus stop Fouquéstraße / Fachhochschule is located on Magdeburger Straße directly in front of the main building and is served by all Brandenburg tram lines and by night buses.

Research and Development

The research profile of the University of Applied Sciences has been developed since the establishment of various laboratory facilities and courses of study. The research projects are regularly published in the research report every two years. In December 2009, against the background of the target agreements for the years 2010 to 2012 between the University of Applied Sciences and the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture, the main activities were focused on the three priority areas of health - medical informatics - telemedicine, energy efficiency of technical systems and corporate security. Due to the existing range of courses, these focus areas are each assigned to a lead department, but are served on an interdisciplinary basis in all three departments. In 2014, the university was able to raise third-party funding for projects with a total budget of 19.90 million euros.

Health - Medical Informatics - Telemedicine

The Department of Computer Science and Media at the Technical University is an institutional founding member of the Gesund Association in Brandenburg, which was launched in April 2006. The University of Applied Sciences has been cooperating with Städtisches Klinikum Brandenburg GmbH, one of the sponsors of the Brandenburg Medical School, since 2007 . The main activities in the focus area are in the research fields of imaging systems , signal processing , bioinformatics , artificial intelligence and computer visualization. Since 2010, the bachelor's degree in medical informatics has been supported by an endowed professorship from the Städtisches Klinikum Brandenburg GmbH.

A joint project called Digital Care Support has existed since 2011. It is a so-called ambient assisted living system. The economics department of the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences, Charité and two companies are involved. Dementia sufferers and their relatives are to be supported by mobile and digital technologies, which should sustainably increase the quality of life of the sick and reduce the burden on carers. The project was published in May 2011 by the TP Theory & Practice Society for Research and New Communication as Project of the Month.

The Brandenburg Medical School was founded in autumn 2014 and cooperates with the Brandenburg Technical University in the field of medical informatics. There is an overlap in personnel between the two universities.

Energy efficiency of technical systems

In the profile focus on energy efficiency of technical systems, a technical master’s course of the same name was developed, which was enrolled for the first time in the 2012/13 winter semester. In 2011, the Eco Rail Innovation cooperation project was launched, in which the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences, among others, is involved. Other partners are, for example, Alstom , Siemens , Bombardier , the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe and Deutsche Bahn . In May 2012, Eco Rail Innovation established an endowed professorship in energy-efficient rail technologies in the main profile area.

Corporate security

As part of the corporate security profile focus, the master's degree in Security Management was established and there are security specializations in other degree programs at the technical university. Student life

The House of Officers cultural center in the former officers' mess of the cuirassiers

Part of the basement of the main building of the university was converted into a student club, the IQ Studentenkeller, which is operated by the AStA of the FH. Regular events are offered there primarily for students. In addition to teaching, the Audimax is also used for public cultural events, for example. Further events take place in the knight's hall. The youth culture factory runs its house of culture in the immediate vicinity of the campus , where parties, concerts, lectures and workshops take place regularly .

The sports hall of the university

The university sports will be organized at the Technical University of Brandenburg by the Student Union. The university's sports facilities include a sports hall, fitness room and archery range. In addition to its own sports offer directly on campus, the AStA cooperates with various sports clubs that are spread across the city. Cooperating associations are, for example, the SG Stahl Brandenburg , the Ruder-Club-Havel Brandenburg and the Brandenburger Sport- und Ruder-Klub 1883. FH teams regularly take part in German university championships . Successes were, for example, winning the 2002 technical college championship by the women's volleyball team . In 2005, the university triathlon championships took place in the city on the Beetzsee regatta course . In 2013 the rowing championships were held there.

The semester start and end parties are regular events at the university. Once a year in the summer semester, the campus festival takes place on the university's open day . A university ball is also held regularly.
