history

Medical University of Brandenburg standorte.png

After the state of Brandenburg was re-established after the political change in 1990, the existing university landscape was also restructured. Since Berlin was the only university town in the former Prussian province of Brandenburg and had a medical faculty and no university or university medicine was founded in the GDR in the Potsdam , Frankfurt or Cottbus districts , there was no such institution in the state in 1990. In 1991 the University of Potsdam , the European University Viadrina and the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus were launched in Brandenburg , but no medical faculty was established in any of these universities. Rather, it was the declared wish of the state government to have the training of doctors, which is very expensive compared to other courses, covered by the state of Berlin and its two universities, Humboldt University and Free University . At this point in time, a timely merger of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg was under discussion and there was no shortage of doctors .

Despite the worsening situation over the years and the increasing shortage of qualified doctors, the state has not indicated any readiness to start establishing a medical faculty or university. In this situation, representatives from various clinics in Brandenburg decided in 2012 to initiate the establishment of a medical university. The main initiators of the project were the Ruppiner clinics in Neuruppin and the municipal clinic in Brandenburg an der Havel. In September of the same year, an application for state recognition of the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane and for approval of the Brandenburg model course in medicine was submitted to the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture in Potsdam. The winter semester 2013/2014 was planned as the start of studies at the new university .

The project to found a new university was received positively by parts of the Brandenburg medical profession. Nevertheless, the planned start for the 2013/14 winter semester was not feasible because the Science Council expressed concerns and demanded that the university's concept be revised. The main points of criticism were a lack of evidence of sufficient research work and lack of clarity about the teaching equipment. In the course of improving the concept, the University of Potsdam and the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg , the Hasso Plattner Institute and the German Institute for Nutritional Research have been won as cooperation partners . Even before was the Fachhochschule Brandenburg, since 1 March 2016 Technical University Brandenburg , firm as partner university. The winter semester 2014/15 was scheduled as the new beginning of studies at the Medical University. On July 8, 2014, the university received state recognition from the state government of Brandenburg. The university's founding date was October 28, 2014. Dieter Nürnberg was appointed the founding dean . During the founding phase, he formed the three-person university management team with Vice Deans Wilfried Pommerien and René Mantke . On September 1, 2016, Edmund Neugebauer became the new dean of the MHB. According to the target, 490 medical students should be enrolled in 2020.

After a further postponement of half a year, teaching began in the 2015 summer semester with the courses in psychology and human medicine . 48 students in medicine and 24 in psychology enrolled in the first semester of the university. On April 10th the solemn first matriculation took place in Neuruppin in the former parish church of St. Marien in the presence of the Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke .

With effect from January 1, 2019, the cooperation agreement with the State of Brandenburg on the Faculty of Health Sciences, which was prepared in 2017 as a joint faculty of the University of Potsdam, the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus-Senftenberg and the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane came into force. This required a restructuring of the Brandenburg Medical School. Since this no longer consists of just one faculty, a presidium was introduced as a superordinate management level, which is controlled by a senate. When Edmund Neugebauer was appointed university president, the position of dean became vacant. On March 21 and April 1, 2019, Peter Markus Deckert was elected Dean of the Medical Faculty, Karsten-Henrich Weylandt as Vice Dean for Research and Science and Thomas Stamm as Vice Dean for Studies and Teaching.

carrier

The university is supported by the Medical University Campus GmbH . The holdings in this have been distributed as follows since the university was founded: 33.33 percent each hold the municipal municipal hospital Brandenburg GmbH in Brandenburg an der Havel and the municipal Ruppiner Kliniken GmbH in Neuruppin. The last third is divided between Immanuel Diakonie GmbH (11.12 percent) in Berlin with the Immanuel Klinik Rüdersdorf and the Immanuel Klinikum Bernau Heart Center Brandenburg, Sparkasse Ostprignitz-Ruppin (11.11 percent) and Stadtwerke Neuruppin GmbH (11, 11 percent). Immanuel Diakonie is the daughter of the Baptists Schöneberg, Evangelical Free Church Community Berlin-Schöneberg, a corporation under public law . The Sparkasse Ostprignitz-Ruppin and Stadtwerke Neuruppin are also in municipal ownership.

Education

subjects

In the 2015 summer semester, teaching began at the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane with the courses in human medicine and psychology. The degrees to be achieved are the state examination in human medicine and the Bachelor of Science in psychology . Since the 2016/17 winter semester, it has also been possible to study the Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy (Master of Science).

The human medicine course is offered as a so-called Brandenburger model course medicine . In this, the separation between the pre-clinical and the clinical study phase is abolished at the MHB . The Physikum eliminated. The model course is geared towards working in small learning groups according to the principle of problem-oriented learning . From the first semester onwards, there are practical days in a teaching practice as well as internships in hospitals. In the TRIK teaching format (teamwork, reflection, interaction, communication), students reflect in practice under supervision .

Training locations

Seminar and lecture building at Nicolaiplatz 19 in Brandenburg

Theoretical training in human medicine is divided between the university towns of Neuruppin and Brandenburg an der Havel. The pre-clinical training in basic subjects such as physiology , biochemistry and anatomy occurs mainly on the campus Neuruppin. Most of the training in the individual clinical subjects, such as surgery and internal medicine, will then be taught at the Brandenburg an der Havel campus. Theoretical lessons in the form of lectures and seminars take place in Brandenburg, among other things, in a listed former school building, a red brick building in the historicist style on Nicolaiplatz near the municipal clinic. Internships, including the nursing internship, the block internship and the internship year , are completed at the three university hospitals and at different partner clinics. In addition, over 20 clinics and 100 teaching practices across the country cooperate with the university as part of the practical day and the science semester. The subject of psychology is primarily taught at the Neuruppin location.

costs

The costs to be borne by the student for the six-year medical course amount to 125,000 euros, for the three-year bachelor's degree in psychology there are 24,660 euros. The costs for the subsequent Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy amount to 16,440 euros. If medical practitioners undertake to complete their further training as a specialist at one of the partner hospitals, a significant part of the costs, up to 80,000 euros, will be waived. Over 20 cooperating hospitals from Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt currently award around 30 scholarships per year for medical students at the MHB. Medical students can finance the costs incurred up to an amount of 45,000 euros via a downstream contribution model, i.e. repayment after graduation, the so-called reverse generation contract (UGV). The tuition fees in the psychological subjects can be financed entirely through downstream contributions based on your later income.

Hospitals

Main building of the Brandenburg Municipal Hospital

The Brandenburg Municipal Clinic is the largest clinic in the western state of Brandenburg, as a hospital providing special care. It opened in 1901. After a significant reduction, it now has almost 500 beds in 2014. In the 1980s there were over 1000. Almost 25,000 inpatients are treated annually. Before the university was founded, it was already the Charité's academic teaching hospital .

Main building of the Ruppiner Kliniken in Neuruppin

The Ruppin clinics , the largest hospital in the northwestern Brandenburg have over 800 hospital beds. Every year between 25,000 and 26,000 inpatients are treated. The first buildings were erected in 1893 and the main building was completed in 1896. The clinic was initially a psychiatric and neurological facility, in which around 1000 patients were cared for from 1897. The Ruppin clinics were also the Charité teaching hospital before.

The third supporting and university clinic of the Medical University is the Immanuel Klinikum Bernau Heart Center Brandenburg of Immanuel Diakonie in Bernau near Berlin .

In addition to the three university clinics, the MHB cooperates with several teaching hospitals in the states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. These participate in the practical training of the students and in the financing of student loans. Cooperating teaching hospitals in Brandenburg are the Immanuel Klinik Rüdersdorf of Immanuel Diakonie GmbH, the DRK Hospital Luckenwalde, the Elbe-Elster-Klinikum with the Elsterwerda Hospital, the Finsterwalde Hospital and the Herzberg Hospital, the Evangelical Deaconess House Berlin Teltow Lehnin with the Evangelical Hospital Luckau and the Evangelical Hospital Ludwigsfede-Teltow , the Helios Clinic Bad Saarow, the Johanniter Hospital in Fläming Treuenbrietzen, the Clinic Niederlausitz with the Clinic Senftenberg and the Clinic Lauchhammer, the Hospital Märkisch-Oderland with the Hospital Wriezen and the Hospital Strausberg, the district hospital Prignitz in Perleberg, the Median Klinik Grünheide, the Oberhavel Klinik Gransee and the Salusklinik Lindow.
