The University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde (abbreviation: HNE Eberswalde or HNEE) was founded in 1830 as a higher forestry school in Eberswalde (Brandenburg) and has existed in its current form since 1992. The President of the HNEE has been Wilhelm-Günther Vahrson since December 1997 .

Since it was re-established as the Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences in 1992, the range of courses and content has been consistently geared towards sustainable development, the environment and nature conservation, making it a leader in Germany in terms of a “green” teaching profile. In 2010, the Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences was renamed the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (FH). On March 1, 2015, the abbreviation (FH) in the name of the university was dropped.

history

The forestry apprenticeship in Eberswalde has seen an eventful development. It emerged from the forest lectures at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin . At the instigation of Georg Ludwig Hartig , a forest academy was founded at Berlin University in 1821. Wilhelm Pfeil (1783-1859) was appointed its first director . The task of the forest academy should be to ensure "the forest-technical, scientifically based training for the forest administration service" in Prussia. In 1830 the academy was relocated to Neustadt-Eberswalde as a higher forestry school under the direction of Pfeils. As a teaching building, the state bought the massive two-story house built in 1793 for the banker and owner of the steel and iron goods factory David Schickler . The building was reduced by one floor in 1913. In the main entrance of the now one-storey plastered building with a hipped roof, a medallion with the portrait of the arrow is set in memory.

Lectures began on May 1, 1830, initially with the three Professors Pfeil, Friedrich Wilhelm Schneider and Julius Theodor Christian Ratzeburg . 25 students from Berlin came to Eberswalde, where another 15 were matriculated. At the same time, Georg Ludwig and Theodor Hartig held forest lectures at Berlin University until 1838.

In 1868 the forestry school Eberswalde in Königl. Eberswalde Forest Academy renamed. From 1874 to 1876, a new administration and lecture hall building in the neo-Renaissance style was built at Schicklerstrasse 5 (New Forest Academy). In 1921 it was converted into a forest university with a rectorate constitution, doctorate and appointment rights. The first doctoral candidate was Johann Albrecht von Monroy , who received his doctorate in forest sciences in June 1924. After the Second World War , under the then active founding dean Johannes Schubert - the Johannes Schubert Foundation was established in his honor in 1995 - there was a new beginning in 1946 as the forestry faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin in Eberswalde. However, the faculty was closed in 1963 for political reasons. Only the Institute for Forest Sciences remained in Eberswalde. From then on, forestry university education in the GDR only took place in Tharandt . Robert Albert taught in Eberswalde until 1950.

Lessons only started again in Eberswalde in 1992, when the Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences was re-established in the course of reunification . This created the forest campus in Alfred-Möller-Straße, which houses the departments of forest and environment (until 2007 forestry) and wood engineering (until 2015 wood technology), and the city campus in Friedrich-Ebert-Straße / Schicklerstraße, where the departments landscape use and Nature conservation and sustainable economy (until 2011 economy) are housed. On March 26, 2010, the university was renamed and was named University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde (FH). Since March 1, 2015, the university has dispensed with the abbreviation (FH).

Locations

Forest campus

The university for sustainable development is divided into three locations: the city campus, the forest campus and the forest botanical garden. The premises of the city campus include the presidential building, administration, the central ecological laboratory and the university's library, the façade of which was made of photo concrete by the photo artist Thomas Ruff. The architects Herzog & de Meuron received an architecture award for the successful integration of the new building into the city's surroundings.

In addition to the university's own workshops and lecture buildings, the forest campus also houses the Thünen Institute for Forest Ecosystems , the State Competence Center Forst Eberswalde and the Eberswalde materials testing institute .

The Eberswalde Forest Botanical Garden was founded in Eberswalde in 1830 together with the Höhere Forstanstalt. It was run as a teaching garden and was intended to give students a clear understanding of native and foreign trees. Even today, the 8 hectare forest botanical garden, which is one of the oldest in Europe, is used for forest science and university teaching. In addition, it fulfills other important functions for nature conservation and the public: demonstration and conservation of endangered areas of nature, educational function, environmental education, recreation. It is home to over 1200 species of trees from all over the world, a living collection of native and foreign trees and shrubs, rare native plants that are threatened with extinction and entire plant communities. Special features are also the special facilities (such as the Afrikanum, the Ostasiatenquartier or the Alpinum), the natural spring moor with a giant horsetail that is up to two meters high and a herb garden as an insight into natural medicine. There is also a geological trail for boulders on the site. The central facility of the Forest Botanical Garden also includes the functional building with greenhouse, laboratory and office space, a horticultural library and the extensive collection of wood samples.

Course offers

In 2015, the four departments of the University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde offered eight bachelor's degree programs with an annual capacity of 383 study places and nine master’s degree programs with an annual capacity of 226 study places. Around 2,200 prospective students apply for these courses every year.

Degrees to be acquired are the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Arts and the Master of Science or Master of Arts. Practical teaching and research as well as innovative courses make the HNE Eberswalde an attractive location for science. The special profile of the university with its focus on the topic of sustainability means that the course is in demand nationwide. Due to the high attractiveness of the study places, a numerus clausus is levied on most degree programs. Since it was founded in 1992, 5,000 graduates have already completed their studies at HNE Eberswalde (as of May 2015).

Research priorities

The HNEE is one of the most research-intensive universities of applied sciences in Germany. As the only national and international one of the few colleges and universities that focuses on the research areas of "sustainable development of rural areas" and "sustainable production and use of natural substances", the HNEE is already a pioneer in these subject areas. The president, Wilhelm-Günther Vahrson, is aiming for an interdisciplinary doctoral college at the HNEE.

Since 2009, the HNE Eberswalde has received 4 of 15 research professorships awarded to the five Brandenburg universities of applied sciences. The committee for the selection of research professorships met in mid-November 2014 and confirmed the research professorships for Ibisch (extraordinary research professorship), Piorr, Häring, Steinhardt and Welp.

The main research areas include:

Sustainable rural development

  • Regional economic development
  • Monitoring and planning in large protected areas
  • Geographic information systems (GIS for short) and remote sensing
  • Business consulting
  • Tourism development
  • Organic farming and marketing

Sustainable production and use of natural substances

  • Wood processing and processing
  • Renewable energy
  • Renewable raw materials
  • Forest protection

sustainability

The term “ sustainability ” has been firmly anchored in teaching and research since the beginning of the university. The topic of "sustainable development" has been continuously developed at the HNE Eberswalde. Under the motto "With nature for people", the university operates in harmony with the economy, society and the environment.

All processes and procedures in the departments, but also in administration and research, are designed according to the precautionary principle. In addition to the relation to sustainability in teaching and research, environmental performance in the operation of the university as well as social interaction are in the foreground of university development. For example, there is a mandatory sustainability lecture for all students across departments. In addition, the university focuses on future industries and key areas such as renewable energies, regional management, sustainable tourism, nature conservation, forestry, organic farming, adaptation to climate change and sustainable economy.

Inspired by the renaming of the university from “University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde” to “University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde”, the round table for “Sustainable Development of the HNE Eberswalde” was launched in June 2010. The aim is, together with members from the entire university sector, to continuously advance the development of the HNE Eberswalde as a sustainable university. In this context, among other things, principles for the sustainable development of the university were developed by students and employees of the university. In 2013 the sustainability principles were adopted by the Senate. The principles have formed the basis of reporting since 2014, when the report on sustainable development at the university was published for the first time. This combines a large number of reporting obligations of the university such as the annual report, the teaching and research report and the environmental statement.

Another topic of the round table is the climate neutrality of the university. This goal has been achieved since 2014. Since then, the University for Sustainable Development has been the first university in Germany to be climate-neutral.

In 2009, the HNE Eberswalde was named the greenest university in Germany by the Internet portal Utopia. Since 2010 the university has received the European EMAS Award for its exemplary environmental management.

Foundations and associations
