Otto Friedrich von Hagen (born February 15, 1817 in Ilsenburg , † September 10, 1880 in Berlin ) was a German forester .

Life

He was the youngest son of Friedrich Wilhelm Christian v. Hagen and his second wife Christiane Charlotte geb. Hardegen born. After attending the Schulpforte educational institution , vH completed an apprenticeship in forestry in Limmritz . From 1838 he went to the Neustadt-Eberswalde Forest Academy and then Berlin . In 1841, vH passed the examination as head forester . Briefly worked as a secretary at the Prussian government colleges in Merseburg , Erfurt and Ansbach , he passed his exams as a government and forest assessor in 1844 . In 1846 vH was transferred to Falkenberg ( Dübener Heide ) as head forester . When he was appointed forest inspector in 1849, he was also appointed to the finance ministry in Berlin, to which all state forests were subordinate. In 1850 vH was promoted to forester, in 1854 to chief forester, in 1861 to country forester and in 1863 to chief forester and ministerial director . In this function he was head of the Prussian state forest administration and curator of the forest academy in Eberswalde .

Von Hagen was the first to demand “that the forest should not only be economic capital and wood fields, but also serve the common good” . As early as 1884 a monument was erected in his honor by Rudolf Pohle on Schwappachweg in Eberswalde , the funds were raised through private donations from foresters. In 2009 this monument was extensively restored. A street name and a square in the Berlin district of Grunewald also remind of vH .
