College choir
The university choir is - like university sports and the university orchestra - an institution at universities , music colleges and technical colleges . It should give students the opportunity to be musically active during their studies. Together with the university orchestras and other musical ensembles, the university choirs see themselves as a contribution to the musical education of students and are often an institution of the Studium generale . In addition, they promote social and cultural life at the universities and make a contribution to their representative public image with public concerts. They are mostly available to students from all faculties, mostly also to alumni and other university members. At older universities, the choirs often operate under the Latin name Collegium musicum vocale and their leader is called University Music Director .
Recording and repertoire
The choirs are almost always mixed choirs with the voices soprano , alto , tenor and bass . The requirements for admission to the university choir are very different at the different universities: some choirs do not require any previous knowledge and do not audition. The joy of singing and the willingness to regularly take part in rehearsals are seen as decisive. Other expected choir experience, the safe use of the voice or the ability of sight-singing and test this in an audition.
The University of Vienna is characterized by the additional offer of two senior choirs for students over 55.
The repertoire is mostly based on European art music, including works of new music . Both a cappella works and choral works that are accompanied by the university orchestra are performed. Such an orchestra is seldom integrated into a common ensemble structure (example MünchenKlang ). At larger universities there are also special choir formations, such as madrigal choirs (example Münster and madrigal choir of the University of Music and Theater Munich ), pop / rock and jazz choirs (example Bayreuth), a division into large choir and chamber music choir (example Bremen) or es works from jazz are included (example Leipzig University).
