The Leibniz Universität Hannover choir is a mixed university choir consisting of students and staff from Leibniz Universität Hannover as well as singers from outside the university.

history

The choir started in 1947, when a student named Karl Heinz Westphal suggested the establishment of a mixed university choir. From 1949 Ludwig Rutt was director of the choir. In 1950 the choir gave itself a statute and went from an informal association to a constituted community. In 1989 Tabea Fischle took over the direction of the choir, which she still holds today.

The choir organizes at least one or two concerts every year and also performs in the university environment and in the Hanover region . These include B. the Herrenhausen Choir Days, the Fête de la Musique , the midsummer night of the choirs and participation in the Lower Saxony Choir Competition (2001 and 2009). In addition, there have been numerous concert tours in Germany ( Hamburg , Leipzig ) and abroad ( Rouen , Posen ) in the past , including appearances at the Settimana di Musica Sacra dal Mondo in Florence and Lucca in 2004 .

In addition to the entrance fees, the fee-free choir is mainly financed by grants from the university and the Leibniz University Society.

repertoire

The choir of the Leibniz Universität Hannover sings both a cappella and instrumentally accompanied works, which span the entire time span from Renaissance and early Baroque to modern and contemporary music . Larger projects in recent years have included B. the Christmas Oratorio and the St. John Passion by Bach , Judas Maccabaeus by Handel and the German Requiem by Brahms . Among the pieces of the 20th century repertoire includes works of composer Alfred Koerppen and Eric Whitacre .

The choir repeatedly cooperated with the university symphony orchestra. In April 2014, the two ensembles performed the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet in the atrium of the Welfenschloss together with other artists and students from the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media . At the same location, the world premiere of Fredrik Schwenk's work “Among all possible ones…” took place in July 2016 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the renaming of the University of Hanover.
