The Münster University Choir (in full: University Choir of the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster ) is a choir at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster . It consists of around 130 active and former members of the university and non-university members (as of 2019). The choir is mainly dedicated to instrumental choral music from the baroque to the modern .

history

The choir was founded in 1981 by Herma Kramm . After her retirement in 1998, Ulrich Haspel took over her successor. Marion Wood has conducted the choir since the 2019/20 winter semester.

organization

The choir has been organized as an unregistered association since 1998 with a board as an executive body. The board has a total of ten members: first and second chairman, secretary, treasurer and four speakers are elected by the general meeting, the conductor and the vice-rector for studies and teaching are members of the board by virtue of their office. Together with the student madrigal choir and Ensemble 22 , the university choir forms the university's collegium musicum vocale (CMV). Before 1998 the choir was organized by the student madrigal choir.

The university semesters are temporally organized, so the concerts usually take place at the end of the semester. Most of the sacred works are performed in the Erphokirche , whereby the choir regularly cooperates with the other choirs of the CMV and often invites soloists from the university environment.

In addition to the entrance fees, the choir is mainly financed by grants from the university, a support association and the contributions of the members.

program

In contrast to the other choirs of the CMV, the university choir mainly performs pieces with instrumental accompaniment and only occasionally gives concerts a cappella . The timeframe ranges from early baroque to modern and includes both large orchestral works as well as individual pieces with small instruments. Examples are the Messiah , the St. Matthew Passion , the Carmina Burana , the Mozart Requiem or the Paulus von Mendelssohn . But also the Requiem by Duruflé , Britten's Saint Nicolas or rarely performed Salzburg church music of the 18th century.

Apart from the semester program, the choir also performs regularly in Münster. For example, he took part in the WDR music festival, several times in the Neue Walls festival and in the choir festival to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the war.

Choir trips

Concert tours also took the choir beyond the borders of the Münsterland . Münster's twin cities were often chosen as musical ambassadors for the university and the city of Münster. So the choir undertook z. B. Trips to Rishon le Zion , York (2007) and Lublin (2014). In 2009 the choir accompanied the State Youth Orchestra of North Rhine-Westphalia on a two-part concert tour through the Münsterland and in and around Paris .
