The Erphokirche , actually Christ the King Church , is a Catholic church in Münster .

history

Parish church for the residential area that was built in the 19th century east of the medieval city fortifications was initially the former collegiate church of St. Mauritz . After the First World War, the city's further eastward expansion led to plans for a new church. This was built in 1928 and on June 17, 1930 ordained are architect was Carl Moritz . It received the patronage of Christ the King , which was introduced as a festival in 1925 and responded to the end of European monarchies in 1918. However, the church bears its common name after Erpho , a bishop of Münster in the 11th century, who had completed the mother church of St. Mauritz and is buried there. Since it was never formally canonized , the designation remained unofficial. It went over to the surrounding Erphoviertel .

The Erphokirche suffered no significant damage during the Second World War.

In 1972 the interior was fundamentally redesigned.

In 2004 the Christ the King Congregation was merged with the St. Pius Congregation, which was parish off in 1963 . The new parish was named after Edith Stein . On Corpus Christi Day 2013, the Edith Stein parish with St. Benedict (St. Konrad and St. Margareta) and Herz-Jesu / St. Elisabeth was incorporated into the parish of Sankt Mauritz . Since then the Erphokirche has been a branch church.

architecture

The architecture of the church is based on Romanesque models, especially St. Mauritz, but differs from the copying historicism of the Wilhelmine era and shows clear features of its time of origin in the geometric and flat wall structure.

The Erphokirche is a spacious hall building made of stone . The rectangular choir is flanked by two towers. Representative claim expresses the mehrtürmige Westwerk with the high, mean square tower, which is flanked by four lower towers, and by cornice strips is divided, a lanzettartiges arched windows and round-arched sound arcades. The western main entrance is a simple three-way arcade.

There are arched windows in the nine axes of the walls of the nave. Flat-roofed porches are built on the walls of the nave, each with a side entrance to the church in the middle.

The eastwork is built as a high box choir, flanked by the two choir towers. There are also arched windows in the choir. A gable roof, which is hipped to the east, extends over the nave and the choir. There is a barrel vault under the roof, which was covered by a suspended wooden ceiling when the church was redesigned in 1972.

Interior

The interior of the church shows itself in the shape changed in 1972. At that time, the choir was separated as a weekday church and a new raised altar area was created in the nave . The expanse of the room is divided on the long walls by wide, transverse pillars with arched passages. The most valuable pieces of equipment are a Romanesque crowned Crucifixus , which was probably made at the beginning of the 13th century - it is on loan from the Diocesan Museum - and a Gothic Mother of God with child, which was created around 1480 in Upper Swabia.

organ

The organ of the Erphokirche is the second largest organ in Münster. The instrument was composed of two organs: On the one hand, the material used was an instrument that was built in 1949 for the Dominican Church in Düsseldorf and sold to Münster in 1974; on the other hand, the existing organ in the Erphokirche was included, which had been built in 1930 by the organ building company Fleiter (Münster), whereby older pipe material was (re) used. The organ has 63 registers on five manuals and a pedal . The original plan was to set up the two works of the 4th and 5th manuals as a separate choir organ in the choir room. A choir organ was not built, however, the two choir organ works were integrated into the ensemble of the main organ. The 4 pedal registers of the choir organ in the console are vacant.

The registers of the two choir organ works are on cone drawers, the registers of the other manual works and the pedal on pocket drawers. The playing and stop actions are electric.
