Erpho

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erpho (* before 1085; † November 9, 1097 ) was bishop of Münster from 1085 until his death in 1097 .

Before his ordination as Bishop of Münster in 1085, Erpho was provost at St. Paulus Cathedral , whose new building he consecrated in 1090. In addition to this new building, several church buildings in Münster can be traced back to him. He also made several donations to the local churches and foundations, including the "Erpho Cross" named after him.

During the time of the investiture controversy, Erpho stood on the side of Emperor Heinrich IV. Even after his defeat by Pope Gregory VII and the trip to Canossa , he remained loyal to Heinrich IV. A few years later he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1091/92 .

In Münster he is venerated as a saint . His feast day is November 9th. One of the churches in Münster ( Erphokirche ) and the Erpho district are named after him. He is buried in the St. Mauritz Church , the construction of which he presumably completed and consecrated.
