Burchard von Holte

Burchard von Holte , also Burchard the Red († March 19, 1118 near Constantinople ), was the 18th bishop of Münster from 1098 until his death in 1118 . His ancestral seat was the Holter Castle .

He was not appointed by the cathedral chapter, but installed by Emperor Heinrich IV . After he was temporarily suspended from his office in 1105, expelled and taken prisoner, Heinrich V reinstated him in the office of Bishop of Munster .

In addition to his position as bishop, Burchard was an influential advisor during the investiture controversy . He accompanied Emperor Heinrich V in 1110 and 1115 on his trips to Rome . In 1111 he was involved in the arrest of Pope Paschal II by the emperor and represented his church policy as Italian chancellor. In 1118 Burchard died while on a legation trip to Constantinople.

In the Erphoviertel of the city of Münster , the Burchardstrasse was named after him.
