Germania Sacra

Volume 12 of the third episode

Germania Sacra (Latin for "Hallowed Germania" or "Hallowed Germany") was originally a catchphrase to designate the territories of the Holy Roman Empire ruled by church princes . Today it is the name of a long-term project to research German church history from the beginning to the Reformation in the 16th century and the secularization at the beginning of the 19th century.

History and structure

Following precursors - the most important and actual founder of which is Martin Gerbert - Paul Fridolin Kehr has tried since 1917 within the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for German History to establish the Germania Sacra as a regional historical link to general church history projects. Hermann Heimpel at the Max Planck Institute for History (MPI) in Göttingen continued this tradition from 1956 . A responsible scientific director was located at this, who coordinated the work of external experts.

The project has been based at the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen since 2008 , as the MPI for History was rededicated. The project is currently (as of August 2020) headed by Hedwig Röckelein . The currently around 50 employees - mostly archivists - work part-time, but sometimes with considerable effort on the individual projects. The close collaboration between archives and institutionalized research is unique in Germany. In February 2017 the project celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Goals and Methods

The aim of the Germania Sacra is to provide a historical-statistical description of the institutions of the Church in the Holy Roman Empire . The entire sources and the literature of the medieval and early modern spiritual institutions from the dioceses (with a focus on the ranks of bishops), through cathedral chapters to the monasteries up to their end in the Reformation or secularization are to be made accessible and presented.

The aim of the project is to provide basic information for further research. The publications are divided into an old and a new series; In 2008, the "Third Series" began, which focuses on the description of the dioceses and cathedral chapters in what is now the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, there are the studies on Germania Sacra and a newly opened series of supplement volumes on Germania Sacra .

The project website provides a personal database that enables the personnel lists of the published volumes to be searched. In addition, the project offers a database on monasteries and foundations of the Old Kingdom.

Fonts and digital copies

Almost all of the volumes of the old and new series that have already been published are freely available online as digital copies. The volumes of the third series appear 3 years after their publication as open access online editions.
