Instead of going into teaching, Struck opted for an archive career. From April 1936 to September 1937 he attended the Institute for Archival Science and Historical Training at the Secret Main State Archives in Berlin-Dahlem . He then worked as a research assistant. From April 1938 he worked as a State Archives Assessor at the State Archives Zerbst / Anhalt . After military service and an injury in World War II , he was again employed in Zerbst until the end of 1945. From January 1948 until his retirement in 1976 he worked at the main state archive in Wiesbaden, where he was initially employed as a research assistant until 1951, then as an archivist and chief archivist until 1970 and finally as archive director until 1976. From 1971 on he headed the facility.

From 1972 to 1978 he was editor-in-chief of the Nassau Annals . In addition to the actual archive work, Struck was also involved in regional historiography in many ways. The focus was on the history of the monasteries and monasteries on the Lahn, the Peasants' War and a comprehensive description of the emigration from the Duchy of Nassau in the years 1806–1866. He came to the conclusion that in the years 1816–1845 about 16,000 and in the 20 years from 1846–1866 over 18,000, i.e. a total of 34,000 people, emigrated from the Duchy of Nassau. For the Germania Sacra project , he contributed the volumes on the Diez, Dietkrichen, Idstein and Weilburg monasteries.

For his services to history, Struck was awarded an honorary professorship by the University of Frankfurt Main in 1975 and in 1979 with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . On his 80th birthday, the 1991 volume of the Nassau Annals was dedicated to him.
