Erich Theodor Max Rudolph Philipp Karl Ottmar Freiherr von Guttenberg (born February 27, 1888 in Augsburg , † December 1, 1952 in Erlangen ) was a German officer , archivist and historian . He was one of the founders of the modern Franconian national history as a discipline.

Life

He was born in Augsburg in 1888 as the son of Colonel Franz-Karl von Guttenberg (line: Guttenberg-Steinenhausen) and his wife, a baroness von Künsberg . He attended the humanistic high school St. Anna in Augsburg, the humanistic high school in Landau in the Palatinate , the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich and the old grammar school in Würzburg. In 1906 he joined the Bavarian Army as an officer candidate and in 1908 acquired an officer license . From 1912 he worked in the Bavarian War Archives in Munich. In 1913 he was called up for military service, most recently in the rank of lieutenant . An injury ended his military career prematurely.

From 1919 he studied history, philosophy and philology at the Philipps University of Marburg , the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich . In 1925 he was at Anton Chroust about the "Territories Education in the Upper Main" to Dr. phil. ( summa cum laude ) doctorate. In 1922 he became an archivist in the war archive in Munich. From 1924 to 1935 he worked as a state archivist. He was given leave of absence (1929–1931) for the collaboration offered by Paul Fridolin Kehr at the Germania Sacra of the Bamberg diocese .

From 1935 to 1936 he was a full professor for Middle and Modern History, historical auxiliary sciences at the Philosophical Faculty of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . Then he moved to the University of Erlangen . There he was on the board of the historical seminar, director of the institute for Franconian regional research and chairman of the society for Franconian history.

In October 1946 Guttenberg was elected a full member of the Commission for Bavarian State History , and in 1947 he became a full member of the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He edited u. a. the Historical Atlas of Bavaria and the Historical Place Name Book of Bavaria and was the author of articles in the New German Biography (NDB).

Freiherr von Guttenberg, Protestant, was married to Eva-Maria von Rotenhan and the father of two children.
