The Wirsberg-Gymnasium , formerly also called the Altes Gymnasium , is a coeducational , humanistic, linguistic and scientific-technological high school in Würzburg . Until the implementation of the G8 in Bavaria, the grammar school took part in the European grammar school trial. The school has around 700 students and teachers, making it one of the smallest grammar schools in Würzburg. The school is the office of the ministerial representative for the grammar schools in Lower Franconia and the internship office for the grammar schools in Lower Franconia is also located on its premises. The high school is one of the Centers of Excellence for school quality. The school was founded in 1561 as Würzburg's first grammar school by Friedrich von Wirsberg and built in its current form in 1957 after the building was destroyed in the bombing raid on Würzburg on March 16, 1945 .
location
The Wirsberg-Gymnasium is located on the southern edge of the city center on the bank of the Main, approximately at the height of the Ludwigsbrücke. The back yard borders on part of the historic city wall of Würzburg. The Röntgen Gymnasium , the Hotel Walfisch and the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt are in the immediate vicinity . The public transport connection is via the bus and tram junction Sanderring. Due to the traffic routing, it can only be reached by car through the street Am Pleidenturm.
timeline
The school opened on April 28, 1561 and lessons were held in the rooms of the vacant Augustinian monastery between Neubaustraße and Domerschulstraße. The Jesuit college was built there in 1564 and is now the home of the seminary. In 1567 the school became Gymnasialkonvikt under the direction of Jesuits . Even when the newly founded university used the rooms in 1582 , classes continued to take place there.
After 1816/17 the school was called the Königlich-Bayerisches Gymnasium and in 1829 moved into its own building, an old building in Wirsbergraße, formerly an Augustinian monastery. From then on the school was called Altes Gymnasium or Altes Pennal . The building burned down during the bombing raid on Würzburg on March 16, 1945 . On the site of the old grammar school , the new building of the (now expanded) police station was built in 1958. After December 1945, classes were temporarily continued at various locations. In 1957, construction began on today's school building on the Main, where the northern part of the long old infantry barracks used to be . Lessons began there in the 1960/61 school year.
Younger story
In 2007, encouraged by more afternoon classes as part of G8 , the construction of a cafeteria in the inner courtyard of the building was planned. The extension designed by the Würzburg architects Hetterich was inaugurated on September 24, 2007 and is now also used as a lounge for the students.
In the 2007/2008 school year, the scientific and technological training course was offered for the first time with in-depth treatment of the subjects of physics, chemistry and computer science, which led to an increased 5th grade.
The school grounds
The U- shaped main wing of the school in Bauhaus style surrounds the modern cafeteria and is closed with a walkway. This is used by the teachers as a lounge, among other things, but students are not allowed to enter it due to insufficient fall protection. At the front, next to the main entrance, there is an extension with a music hall and bicycle cellar. The inner and back courtyards are surrounded by the largely historic city wall and serve as a parking lot and as a place to stay during breaks. On the other side of the street opposite the main building, the gym building with two halls is integrated into the block of houses. There are offices in the attic. When the weather is suitable, sports lessons take place at the Sanderrasen sports facility, which is almost 700 meters away , while swimming lessons are held in the Sandermare health spa next to the Sanderrasen.
A bronze statue of Orpheus adorns the teacher's parking lot in front of the school .
particularities
Maximilianeum Foundation
The school has so far provided five scholarship holders from the Maximilianeum Foundation, more than any other school in Würzburg:
- 1969: Christian Hock
- 1986: Paul Ziche
- 1995: Wolfgang Behr
- 2004: Philipp Hacker
- 2005: Elisabeth Forster
Culture
The traditional-humanistic value awareness of the Wirsberg-Gymnasium offers pupils of all ages development opportunities that go far beyond the standardized canon of subjects of the regular high schools. Three elective courses for theater and dramatic design as well as a long tradition in music theater (opera, musical, etc.) give the grammar school an outstanding reputation by bringing modern language, humanistic and natural science lessons as well as musical education and heart formation into harmony. The Wirsberg-Gymnasium is a welcome guest at the Musikhochschule, the Kulturspeicher and the Mainfrankentheater in Würzburg. Many of the students at Wirsberg-Gymnasium are young students at the Musikhochschule. Orchestra, big band, theater orchestra, choir and vocal ensemble complete the offer. Dancing, singing and making music in music lessons are very important.
E-learning
Since the Wirsberg-Gymnasium is one of six schools participating in the e-learning pilot project in Lower Franconia, a laptop class (8th grade) and, in addition to two computer rooms, a multimedia classroom were set up in the 2007/08 school year. Other classes also work with multimedia content via the BayernMoodle learning management system .
Movie
The high school for student films is known nationwide. Under the supervision of Ms. Blum-Pfingstl, a number of youth films were made as part of the film elective lessons, but also many projects outside of class. This includes both technical work and projects by younger students. The Wirsberg-Gymnasium is one of the Bavarian competence centers for video / film. The elective film course enjoys great interest and the committed students take part in many competitions with their work. Elective course participants also help organize the Long Night of the Self-Made , an evening at the cinema where student films are shown as part of the International Film Weekend .
WiHi
"WiHi" (Wirsberg Help) is a school forum project . Usually older students are placed with younger students as tutors within the school. For this purpose, at the beginning of the school year every student in the higher grades is given a form with which they can register as a tutor for a subject of their choice within this project. The prerequisite is that he achieved at least grade 2 in this subject in the previous year's report. Next, all those interested in tutoring are identified, also using distributed forms. Finally, tutors and students are brought together, who independently agree on appropriate remuneration for the "teacher".
mathematics
Mathematics events have developed over the years due to the intensive care and support provided by the Mathematics student council and the interest shown by the students. This includes an annual internal maths competition in which small groups of interested students compete against each other within the grades and work out solutions to more difficult tasks. The best are awarded prizes from the parents' council.
This also includes active and sometimes successful participation in the state mathematics competition. The Wirsberg-Gymnasium was awarded the 3rd prize for best schools in 2004.
Some students also take the opportunity to study mathematics early.
School ball
The high school has held a school ball every spring since 2006. This is organized by the school forum and takes place in the city canteen of the Würzburg student union. Many students are involved in the preparation and tasks during the event, such as the sale of drinks, the cloakroom service and entertainment.
