Andreas Metz (born December 7, 1767 in Bischofsheim , † December 7, 1839 in Würzburg ) was a German clergyman, philosopher and mathematician.

Life

Andreas Metz was born as the son of destitute parents in Bischofsheim an der Rhön.

He attended the Latin school there and then went to high school in Würzburg. In order to earn a living he was a singing boy of the Pleichach Music Choir and later gave lessons. He graduated from high school so well that he was publicly honored and granted some privileges.

On November 26, 1782 he began studying theology at the University of Würzburg . In 1785 he came to the " Clerical Seminar ", whose students gave sermons in the court church to Prince Bishop Franz Ludwig von Erthal , so that he could get to know his future leadership elite. Here the prince-bishop became aware of him, so that Andreas Metz was able to do his doctorate in 1786 at the expense of the prince-bishop with Michael Anton Schwab (1748–1806) at the University of Würzburg. He was then a repetitor of philosophy until he was ordained a priest on December 17, 1791 . He then came to Großbardorf as a chaplain until 1793 , where he met a pastor with a large library that he could use for his personal training. After his time as a chaplain, he was appointed prefect of the aristocratic Julianeum seminary in 1793 .

On October 2, 1794, "the Prefect of the Noble Boys" was appointed full professor of philosophy at the grammar school and gave lectures on philosophy, higher philology and physics except experimental physics, plus an order from the prince-bishop, who informed him during an audience to teach the philosophy of Kant. After the death of Professor Matern Reuss (1751–1798), Andreas Metz received on November 24, 1798 permission to hold lectures on those parts of philosophy that were assigned to the deceased Reuss; this was associated with a salary supplement of 100 guilders. On August 16, 1802 Andreas Metz was appointed full professor of logic, metaphysics and practical philosophy by Prince-Bishop Georg Karl von Fechenbach as successor to Matern Reuss.

The Grand Duchy of Würzburg was assigned to the Electorate of Bavaria through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss in 1803 , which led to a reorganization of the university and Andreas Metz was given the lectures on anthropology and logic. In 1805 he was accepted as a "real member" of the mathematical-physical section, after he had also given mathematical lectures, because "mathematics harmonized perfectly with logic".

In 1805 there was another change of government, after Bavaria in the Peace of Preßburg Tirol in exchange for Würzburg to the Habsburg Ferdinand III. , Grand Duke of Tuscany , resigned. This change of government also led to a reorganization of the university and Andreas Metz then gave lectures on theoretical and practical philosophy.

In 1814, by resolution of the Congress of Vienna, Würzburg largely reverted to Bavaria. On July 27, 1814, Andreas Metz was elected Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy.

In 1835 he gave the lectures on theoretical and practical philosophy to Franz Hoffmann in order to give lectures only on mathematics. It was not until 1837 that he succeeded Johann Schön (1771-1839) as a full professor of theoretical and practical philosophy and mathematics, an office for which he had applied on January 9, 1804. After his death from a “breast disease”, Aloys Mayr followed him as a professor of mathematics.
