The Deutschhaus-Gymnasium , initially Gymnasium am Zeller Berg , was founded in 1975 as the first district high school in Würzburg in the Mainviertel district . It offers a modern language and a scientific-technological branch. A special feature is the promotion of gifted children in separate model classes and sports classes. Since the school year 2010/11, a full-day train has been run in a bound form. The school was named after the German order and the Deutschhaus church opposite .

location

The Deutschhaus-Gymnasium is located in the Mainviertel at the foot of the fortress mountain opposite the Deutschhaus Church and the Office for Rural Development .

timeline

Owner of 1972 resulting in the grounds of the former abdominal cellar in the Zellerstraße building of the X-Gymnasium Würzburg relieving School was the district of Würzburg. At the beginning of the 2008/09 school year, Norbert Baur took over the post of headmaster from Armin Hackl, who ran the school from 1999 to 2008 and was able to bring it into the focus of the Würzburg public through a large number of campaigns and press reports. Baur had previously worked as a teacher at the Deutschhaus-Gymnasium. At the beginning of the 2015/16 school year, Michael Schmitt took over the position of headmaster from Nobert Baur, who ran the school from 2008 to 2015.

School grounds

The old school building is built in the style of the 1970s and has been renovated in terms of both energy and appearance in recent years. The new building, which was inaugurated on March 13, 2008, has a modern copper-glass facade. The completely renovated sports area with triple hall is located next to the neighboring Nautiland swimming pool and the ice rink in the green areas of the baroque city fortifications.

particularities

The Deutschhaus-Gymnasium is a science-technology (NTG) and linguistic (SG) high school . The first foreign language in both courses is English. From the 6th grade onwards, students learn Latin or French (with the exception of the model class: NTG without Latin), from the 8th grade onwards, they are divided into NTG and SG (also for sports promotion). Students can choose either the science-technology (more natural sciences) or linguistic (more languages) branch (language branch: foreign language sequence English, Latin, French, Latin or Spanish).

Model classes for gifted students

Since the 2001/02 school year, the Deutschhaus-Gymnasium has been running a class for highly gifted or particularly gifted students per year (now 5th to 12th grade), making it the second Bavarian gymnasium to promote gifted students on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of Culture.

The lessons in the model classes are based on the curriculum and the structures of the scientific and technological training course of the Bavarian grammar school; The treatment of fabrics is partly tightened in time (acceleration) and - briefly summarized - extended by the following content (enrichment):

  • a third foreign language
  • a philosophical and humanities focus (including the subject "European thinking")
  • Compulsory offers to promote social and personal skills (e.g. in the subjects of "creative design" and "personal skills")

In the model classes, particular emphasis is placed on forms of instruction that encourage independent work (including project and self-study times).

Students must also take an additional elective course per school year from grade 7. From the 8th grade onwards, they also deal in depth with a topic in a freely chosen subject per school year over a period of six months and prepare a project on this. In the upper level, closer cooperation with the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg is planned (e.g. in the form of so-called early studies).

The model project is also based on intensive collaboration between parents, students and teachers. So has z. B. Each student has a contact teacher (a kind of mentor) with whom he meets and discusses regularly.

The students in the model classes are selected through an extensive admissions process that takes place for the 5th class of the following school year between the end of January and the end of April. The admission process includes psychological diagnostics and trial lessons (the so-called introductory days). A lateral entry into higher grades is also possible - the admission procedure for this will be carried out in mid to late June.

School career

The Deutschhaus-Gymnasium is a science-technology (NTG) and linguistic (SG) high school . The first foreign language in both courses is English. From the 6th grade onwards, students learn Latin or French (with the exception of the model class: NTG without Latin), from the 8th grade onwards, they are divided into NTG and SG (also for sports promotion). Students can choose either the science-technology (more natural sciences) or linguistic (more languages) branch (language branch: foreign language sequence English, Latin, French, Latin or Spanish).

Culture night

Once a year there is a culture night where, among other things, the various intensification courses present their results, pieces of music are performed by the choir or plays are performed.

Sports

The school has distinguished itself in recent years as the most successful Bavarian and one of the most successful German rowing schools.

In 2011 a team from the school won the national basketball championship in the WK 3 age group.

The school has developed a sports promotion concept with mass sports in the lower grades, sports classes for competitive sports in the middle grades and the student sports academy in the upper grades.

From the 2012/13 school year, football will be added to the sports classes for basketball, rowing and swimming. The high school cooperates with various sports clubs.

In 2011, the "curriculum vitae" campaign by the Sports Department raised a total of 20,000 euros for UNICEF; the project was repeated in 2015 with similar success.

mathematics

In the state mathematics competition of Bavaria , the Deutschhaus-Gymnasium has received several awards as one of the best-performing schools. In 2009 the school received 1st prize. In 1999, 2007, 2008 and 2010 a second prize could be won. In 1999 Elschad Schirinow and Ulrich Seubert qualified for the holiday seminar in Pegnitz. In 2009 Fabian Kraus and Alexander Wiegand received an invitation, the following year also Jan Penquitt and Oliver Mehling.

Transition from school to university

The school cooperates with numerous external partners and, with the introduction of the new grammar school upper level from 2009, has developed various models of an accompanied transition from grammar school to university. In the School of Communication, Information, Organization (SAKIO), 15 upper-level students each attend university courses instead of school lessons and contribute their achievements to both the Abitur and a Bachelor's degree in economics. The project started in 2010. The partners of the blended learning project are the economics faculty of the University of Würzburg and europafels.

SMV

The students with responsibility (alternatively also students with visions) were able to successfully organize a school ball for the first time on October 10, 2009. This took place in cooperation with the Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium . The motto of the ball was “Dance for the World”, which resulted from the fact that the proceeds of 1200 € were donated to a project in Tanzania.

Dress code controversy

The school attracted nationwide attention in May 2015 when it established a new dress code that prohibited the wearing of any kind of headgear, T-shirts with offensive prints, as well as tank tops and hot pants . There was nationwide reporting on this.
