Maximilian "Maxi" Kleber (born January 29, 1992 in Würzburg ) is a professional German basketball player who has been playing for the Dallas Mavericks in the National Basketball Association (NBA) since 2017 .

Career

Kleber learned the game in his youth at TG Veitshöchheim; later he also ran for SC Heuchelhof and TG Würzburg on the field. From 2009 to 2014 he played for his home club s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg, with whom he marched from the first regional league to the basketball Bundesliga . He made his debut in Germany's top division in the 2011/12 season. Kleber initially signed up for the 2012 NBA draft , although he was not yet one of those players who are "automatically" eligible for the selection process due to their age. However, he later withdrew the registration and instead took part in the Adidas Euro Camp in Treviso, Italy.

In 2014, the year of his national team debut, Kleber was not selected as one of five registered German players in the 2014 NBA draft . After Würzburg's relegation in the same year, Kleber moved to Obradoiro CAB in Spain without a contract . There he reached in 33 games with an average playing time of 25:28 minutes on average 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 0.8 basket assists and a ball win. After only one year in Spain, Kleber moved back to the German Bundesliga and signed a two-year contract with Bayern Munich . In the 2015/16 season he was used by Bayern in 24 Bundesliga games and scored an average of eight points and 4.9 rebounds per encounter. In his second Munich season (2016/17), Kleber was in the starting line-up in all of his 37 Bundesliga appearances, achieved an average of 9.0 points per game and was third-best FCB player in this regard with 38 three-point throws.

In the summer of 2017, Kleber switched to the North American basketball league NBA to the Dallas Mavericks , where he went on basket hunt together with Dirk Nowitzki , who was also from Würzburg (Nowitzki ended his career in 2019). Kleber agreed with the Texans in the summer of 2019 to extend the cooperation after his contract had expired.

In summer 2014 Maximilian Kleber made his debut with the men's national team in the European Championship qualification. Kleber was able to convince as a top performer: In five European Championship qualifying games he scored an average of 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds in an average of 22 minutes of playing time. At the 2019 World Cup, Kleber was the third best scorer of the German team with 11.2 points per match.
