Jalen Marquis Brunson (born August 31, 1996 in New Brunswick , New Jersey ) is an American basketball player who has played for the Dallas Mavericks in the National Basketball Association (NBA) since the 2018/19 season . He previously played college basketball for Villanova University . In 2018 he was named National Player of the Year (best college player of the year). Bronson won two national championships with his college team.
Life
Brunson was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey and grew up through sixth grade in southern New Jersey. He is the son of former NBA players Rick Brunson and Sandra Brunson. He has a sister named Erica. His parents met at Temple University , where Rick played for the Owls men's basketball team and Sandra played volleyball . The family first lived in Cherry Hill, New Jersey , but moved seven times before moving to Lincolnshire , Illinois, about 50 km north of Chicago , in 2010 . Like his father, Brunson is left-handed.
Career
High school
After moving to Illinois, Brunson attended Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire and joined the basketball team there. In 2014 and 2015 he was named Gatorade State Player of the Year. After his junior season, NSPN named him the "best point guard in the country". In 2015 he was also appointed to the McDonald's All-American team and won the election for Mr. Basketball of Illinois after he won Stevenson High School for the championship Illinois High School Association (IHSA).
Youth national team
Brunson was part of the US national team of twelve at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which took place June 20-24, 2014. In the opening game against Uruguay, he surpassed Stephon Marburys' assist record (twelve assists against Brazil in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in 1994) by adding 13 assists and thus setting a new record for the US U18 national team. The United States won the gold medal at the tournament.
The following year, Brunson became a member of the twelve-man US squad for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship. Brunson was named the best player ( MVP ) of the tournament after he won the team with an average of 14.0 points, 5.6 assists and 2.1 steals Gold medal. In the semifinals against Greece he scored 30 points. Because of these achievements, he was named Male Basketball Athlete of the Year in the USA on December 21, 2015.
college
Brunson had chosen Villanova University in the US state of Pennsylvania near Philadelphia and began his college career in the 2015/16 season. As a starter, he helped the team win the 2016 NCAA Division I championship. In his sophomore year, he was unanimously elected to the All-Big East team. Villanova was able to win the NCAA Division I championship this season as well. After his junior season, he announced that he would sign up for the 2018 NBA draft . He was named to the NCAA First Team in the 2017/18 season. On December 17, 2019, Brunson was named College Basketball Player of the Decade by Sporting News . Of his 116 college games, he was in 115 of the starting five.
2018-19 NBA season
On June 21, 2018, the Dallas Mavericks selected Brunson in the second round with the 33rd draft pick. He was the fourth Villanova player to be selected in the 2018 NBA draft after Mikal Bridges (tenth pick), Donte DiVincenzo (17th pick) and Omari Spellman (30th pick) . Brunson then played the 2018 NBA Summer League and then received a four-year contract with the Mavericks. He made his NBA debut on October 17, 2018, scoring three points, a rebound, and an assist. On January 5, 2019, he was recognized and scored as the 2018 Amateur Athlete of the Year by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association on the same evening with 13 points and eleven rebounds the first double-double of his professional career. On March 12, 2019, Brunson reached his career high of 34 points. During the season , Brunson was mostly a substitute.
2019-20 NBA season
In the 2019/20 season , Brunson mostly came off the bench. After Luka Dončić dropped out of the starting line-up due to injury on December 16, 2019 and Brunson moved to the starting line-up, the Mavericks ended an 18-game winning streak for the Milwaukee Bucks . With 13 points and eleven assists, Brunson managed his first double of the season.
