Kristaps Porziņģis (born August 2, 1995 in Liepāja ) is a Latvian basketball player who is active as a power forward / center for the Dallas Mavericks in the North American professional league NBA . Porziņģis is considered one of the greatest talents in European basketball and often draws comparisons with Dirk Nowitzki .

Career

Porziņģis started his career at BK Liepājas Lauvas and moved to Spain to CDB Sevilla in the summer of 2010 . In 2012 he made his debut in the highest Spanish league . In 2015 Porziņģis was named Eurocup Rising Star .

On April 16, 2015, Porziņģis announced that he would sign up for the 2015 NBA Draft . He was considered a potential lottery pick , which was traded among the first 14 players in the NBA draft . On June 25, 2015, he was drafted fourth by the New York Knicks . On July 30, 2015, he signed a contract with the Knicks.

On November 17, 2015 Porziņģis scored 29 points and 11 rebounds in the 102: 94 victory over the Charlotte Hornets . Porziņģis was voted Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for his good performance in November, December and January . He also took part in the NBA Rising Star Challenge for the world selection against a US selection and was his team's top scorer with 30 points. However, the American selection was defeated. In his third NBA season Porziņģis developed again significantly. in the first months of the 2017/18 season he averaged 22.7 points and 2.4 blocks. Both statistics represent new personal bests. After the club change of Knick's figurehead Carmelo Anthony at the beginning of the current season, Porziņģis had already developed into a leading player in his third season.

On February 7, 2018, he tore the cruciate ligament in his left knee in the game against the Milwaukee Bucks and missed the rest of the season.

On January 31, 2019, he was swapped with Tim Hardaway Jr. , Courtney Lee and Trey Burke for DeAndre Jordan , Wesley Matthews and Dennis Smith Jr. and the first-round selection rights in two future NBA drafts to the Dallas Mavericks . Porziņģis only celebrated his return to the sport for his new team at the start of the 2019/20 season.

International

At the international level, Porziņģis represented the Latvian U-18 selection at the U-18 European Championship in 2013. During the course of the tournament, he scored an average of 11.6 points and ten rebounds per match.

At the 2017 European Championships he was the third-best thrower of the tournament with an average of 23.6 points, collected 5.9 rebounds per encounter and posted the highest value of all EM participants with 1.9 blocked throws per use.
