The NBA Rookie of the Year Award is an award from the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the best newcomer ( rookie ), ie player in their first NBA season.

The NBA Rookie of the Year Award has been presented since the 1947/48 season. The associated trophy is named after Edward Gottlieb , a founding father of the NBA and long-time owner of the Philadelphia Warriors . The NBA Rookie of the Year is chosen by the same journalists who also present the NBA Most Valuable Player Award .
Award winners
The oldest winner of the Rookie of the Year Award was Ralph Sampson 1983/84 at the age of 23 years and 9 months. The youngest winner was LeBron James in 2003/04 at the age of 19 years and 4 months. The first European player to receive the award was Pau Gasol in 2001/02 . In 1971, 1995 and 2000 there were two winners with equal points.
All award winners were honored the following year of their draft , with the exception of Jerry Lucas , Larry Bird , Blake Griffin and Ben Simmons (rookie season one year after the draft) and David Robinson (rookie season two years after the draft).
