The 2005-06 NBA season marked the National Basketball Association's 60th season . The regular season began on November 1, 2005 and ended on April 19, 2006 . 30 teams, each playing 82 games, took part. The eight best in each conference qualified for the NBA Playoffs , which began on April 22, 2006 and were completed by the NBA Finals on June 20 .
The Miami Heat became NBA champions for the first time in the club's history, after defeating the Dallas Mavericks 4-2 in the finals .
Season Notes
- On October 17, 2005 , NBA Commissioner David Stern declared that a new, league-wide dress code came into force, which forbids, among other things, jerseys, T-shirts, jeans, sports shoes, hats or necklaces.
- Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina , the New Orleans Hornets played their home games at different venues. 32 games were played at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City , 6 games at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at Louisiana State University and only 3 games at the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans .
- The NBA All-Star Game took place on February 19, 2006 at the Toyota Center in Houston . The Eastern Conference picks beat the West 122-120. LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers has been named the game's MVP .
- On January 22, 2006, Kobe Bryant scored 81 points in a game against the Toronto Raptors of the Los Angeles Lakers . This was the second highest point haul in NBA history. Only Wilt Chamberlain scored more points in his 100-point game in 1962 .
- Ray Allen of the Seattle SuperSonics set a new NBA record for three turned up in a single season. He hit a total of 269 three-point throws in the regular season .
