Marcus Dion Camby (born March 22, 1974 in Hartford , Connecticut ) is a retired American basketball player . He was known for his strength in rebounds and blocking opposing throws, but also for his weakness on the offensive. In his career, he was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year , among other things .

Career

Camby first played for the University of Massachusetts Amherst under coach John Calipari . In 1996 UMass reached the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship with Camby . Camby was named College Player of the Year at the end of the season and then moved to the NBA after a total of three years at college .

In the 1996 NBA draft he was selected by the Toronto Raptors to a total second only drafted , where he also played for two years. In 1997 he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team .

He then played for four years for the New York Knicks , with which he reached the NBA final in 1999 , and six years with the Denver Nuggets . He had his most successful sporting time with the Nuggets and was awarded the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2007 .

He then played two years for the Los Angeles Clippers and two more for the Portland Trail Blazers . In 2012 he was traded from the Blazers to the Houston Rockets for which he played until the end of the season.

After his contract had expired, Camby signed a three-year contract with the New York Knicks for the 2012/2013 season, for which he played from 1998 to 2002. In return, the Rockets received players Toney Douglas and Josh Harrellson from the Knicks.

After a year he was transferred to his first NBA club, the Toronto Raptors, but released after just seven days.

He was then re-committed by the Houston Rockets, but his contract was immediately dissolved before the start of the season.
