Rudy Gobert-Bourgarel (born June 26, 1992 in Saint-Quentin ) is a French basketball player who is currently under contract with the Utah Jazz in the NBA . Gobert is best known for his strong defense and is considered one of the best players in the league when it comes to blocking opposing throws. He has already won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award twice in his career . Gobert was voted All-Star for the first time in the 2019/20 season .
Europe
Rudy Gobert was born to a French woman and the Guadeloupe former French national basketball player Rudy Bourgarel. Gobert first attracted attention at the 2010 U-18 basketball world championship in Lithuania , where he was the best shot blocker and rebounder of his team and came seventh with France.
Gobert initially played at club level for the local clubs JSC St-Quentin and Saint-Quentin Basket-Ball club , before he was active for Cholet Basket in the French league from 2010 to 2013 . During the 2010–11 season he scored 4.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. In the following season he scored 4.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. In the 2012–13 season, Gobert scored 8.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.
NBA
Draft and rookie season (2013-14)
Even in the run-up to the draft , Gobert was considered one of the great European talents. During the measurements, the 2.16 m tall Frenchman had an arm span of 2.37 m, which was a record at the time. In the 2013 NBA Draft , Gobert was recruited in the first round in 27th place by the Denver Nuggets and shortly thereafter transferred to the Utah Jazz .
In his first year Gobert did not see much playing time and switched between jazz and the then farm team of jazz, the Bakersfield Jam . In 45 NBA games, he achieved 2.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.9 blocks per game in Utah in an average of 9.6 minutes.
Sophomore year (2014-15)
Gobert made his breakthrough in his second year. With his defensive presence he earned more playing time. After the transfer of the nominal center Enes Kanter , Gobert was promoted to starter. He also took part in the NBA All-Star Weekend Rookie Challenge and scored 18 points and 12 rebounds in the victory of the world selection against the American selection. After the All-Star Break, the Jazz improved not least thanks to Gobert, who improved the team's defense. On March 3, 2015, Gobert set a career record of 24 rebounds in the 93-82 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies . Gobert played in all 82 games, scoring 8.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. At the end of the season, he became the fourth best shot blocker of the past NBA season. He also took third place for the most improved player of the season and fifth place in the election for the best defender of the season . With the Jazz, however, he missed the playoff qualification for the second time in a row.
Third and fourth year and sporting breakthrough (since 2015)
In the 2015-16 season, Gobert had to struggle with many minor injuries and missed 21 games of the season. Nevertheless, he set new career highs with 9.1 points and 11.0 rebounds on average. With Utah, however, he again narrowly missed making the play-offs. In October 2016, Gobert signed a four-year contract worth 102 million with Jazz. On March 20, 2017, Gobert set a new career record with 8 blocks against the Indiana Pacers . Two days later, in the 108-101 victory of Jazz over the New York Knicks , Gobert set a new career record with 35 points. With the jazz Gobert reached the playoffs for the first time. There the jazz reached the second playoff round. Gobert was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team and the All-NBA Second Team at the end of the season for his outstanding performance . In the choice of the best defender of the season , Gobert took second place , behind Draymond Green . In the vote for the most improved player of the season , Gobert took third place.
In the 2017-18 season, Gobert suspended almost 30 games due to many minor injuries. After his recovery in January 2018, he returned to the field and led Jazz to many important victories and the subsequent playoff qualification towards the end of the season. The Jazz were able to win 30 of the last 35 games of the season, which was also thanks to Gobert's return. Gobert then won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award for the first time . After Mark Eaton (1985 and 1989), he is the second jazz player to do this.
In the 2018-19 season, Gobert was able to play 81 games of the season and led the Jazz into the NBA playoffs. Once again he won his second award for Defender of the Year in a row and set several career records in points, rebounds and assists. In the 2019/20 season, Gobert was appointed to the 2020 NBA All-Star Game for the first time in his career .
In mid-March 2020, Gobert was the first NBA player whose infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus became known. As a result, the NBA suspended the 2019/20 season. Gobert then publicly apologized to the people he had put in danger by deliberately touching all of the reporters' microphones. At the time, he did not know that he was carrying the pathogen. He classified his behavior as irresponsible. Later, an examination for SARS-CoV-2 also found a positive result for Donovan Mitchell , his teammate at the Utah Jazz.
