Emmanuel Mudiay (born March 5, 1996 in Kinshasa , Democratic Republic of the Congo ) is a Congolese-American basketball player who currently plays for the Utah Jazz in the NBA .
youth
Mudiay's family fled the Second Congo War and came to the United States in 2001. In his youth he played for the team at Grace Preparatory Academy in Arlington , Texas. At the end of his school days he moved to the Prime Prep Academy founded by Deion Sanders in Dallas . After high school, he was considered one of the top talents for the upcoming NBA draft .
Career
Although he initially accepted the SMU Mustangs from coach Larry Brown , he announced in July 2014 that he would not play in college and instead join the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China for an annual salary of $ 1.2 million. Despite a long injury break, Mudiay scored 18.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game in 12 games. After a year in China, he announced his registration for the draft.
In the 2015 NBA draft , Mudiay was selected seventh by the Denver Nuggets . On July 31, he signed a rookie contract with the Nuggets. Mudiay immediately started the Nuggets after the nominal starter Ty Lawson was transferred before the start of the season. Mudiay played 68 games, scoring 12.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists. However, he hit a below-average 36% of his field throws. Nevertheless, he was called up to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team .
During the 2017/18 NBA season, Mudiay fell more and more from the Denver Nuggets rotation and barely got any playing time. He was finally on February 8, 2018, shortly before the NBA trade deadline, in the course of a three-team deal between the Denver Nuggets, the Dallas Mavericks and the New York Knicks , the Devin Harris to the Nuggets and Doug McDermott to sent the Mavericks, traded to New York.
In the sportily weak Knicks Mudiay established himself as a regular player in the 2018-19 season. He achieved a career record of 14.8 points per game in 59 games of the season and hit a good 44% of his field throws. In the summer of 2019, Mudiay signed a one-year contract with Utah Jazz .
