Tywon Ronell "Ty" Lawson (born November 3, 1987 in Clinton , Maryland ) is an American basketball player. He was selected 18th in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves and transferred directly to the Denver Nuggets , where he spent most of his NBA career. During his college years, Lawson played at the University of North Carolina and was named ACC Player of the Year. He was the first point guard since 1978 to receive this award.
life and career
High school
Lawson first attended Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland. He later moved to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. There he also took part in many tournaments, such as the McDonald's All-American Game and the Nike Hoop Summit . In his senior school year, he achieved 23.8 points per game, 9.1 assists and 5 steals.
college
In the 2006/07 season, Lawson played for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. In his junior season, he scored 10.2 points per game and 5.6 assists in 38 games. He also helped his team win the Atlantic Coast Conference title in the regular season. In his sophomore year, Lawson had 12.7 points per game and 5.8 assists. However, he missed a few games due to an ankle injury.
In 2009 he and his team won the national NCAA Division I Basketball Championship . Lawson was named ACC Player of the Year . He also won the Bob Cousy Award (best college point guard). He averaged 16.6 points, 6.6 assists and 2.1 steals. With 8 steals in a final game, Lawson broke the record for the most steals in a championship game.
On June 6, 2008, he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Although his values were below the permitted level, he was still punishable as drinking alcohol in the United States is only permitted from the age of 21.
NBA
In the NBA Draft 2009 Lawson was selected in 18th place by the Minnesota Timberwolves , but then transferred directly to the Denver Nuggets . In the preparatory games he achieved 7.5 points in an average of 16.5 minutes with a hit rate of 52.9% from the field. His rookie year he played as a backup for Chauncey Billups , scoring 8.3 points and 3.1 assists per game.
After Billups left the Nuggets in February 2011, Lawson took the position as starting point guard. On April 9, 2011 Lawson achieved a career record with 37 points. He hit the first 10 three-point throws in a row, which meant an NBA record. Due to a league- wide lockout , Lawson played seven games for the Lithuanian club Žalgiris Kaunas . After the lockout ended, he returned to the Nuggets.
In his third year he started in all 64 games for the Nuggets and scored 16.4 points and 6.6 assists per game. The following year he reached the third-best record of the Western Conference with the Nuggets and qualified for the playoffs. There they were surprisingly eliminated in the first round. In 2013/14 Lawson achieved career highs with 17.6 points, 8.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game, but Denver missed the playoff qualification. Despite good performance - Lawson set a club record with 9.6 assists per game - the Nuggets missed the playoffs again.
After it became known that Lawson was repeatedly caught driving under the influence of alcohol and convicted, the Nuggets decided to stop planning with Lawson.
Lawson went to rehab and a few days later, on June 20, 2015, was sold to the Houston Rockets along with a second-round draft pick in exchange for Joey Dorsey , Nick Johnson, Kostas Papanikolaou , Pablo Prigioni and a first-round draft pick . With the Rockets, however, he could not meet expectations and was released from the Rockets after six months after no team had shown interest in a swap. A few days after his release, Lawson signed a contract with the Indiana Pacers .
After his contract with the Pacers expired, Lawson remained without a new contract until the end of August and finally agreed on a contract with the Sacramento Kings for the 2016/17 season .
