The 2016-17 NBA season marked the National Basketball Association's 71st season . The regular season began on October 25, 2016 at the Quicken Loans Arena , home of the Cleveland Cavaliers , with the game against the New York Knicks . Five games were scheduled for December 25th, Christmas Day , including a new edition of the 2015 and 2016 finals with the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Golden State Warriors . The All-Star Game took place on February 19, 2017 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans . New Orleans was the fallback location as the original Charlotte event was canceled by the NBA when North Carolina passed what is widely considered to be "anti-LGBT law". The regular season ended on April 12, 2017, after which the playoffs were held from April 15, 2017 , in the final of which the Golden State Warriors prevailed 4-1 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
