Johnathan Hildred Wall Jr. (born September 6, 1990 in Raleigh , North Carolina ) is an American basketball player who has played for the Washington Wizards in the NBA since 2010 . The 1.93 meter high wall was selected first in the NBA draft 2010 and is used in the position of point guard . He has been voted NBA All-Star five times in his career . He received his first All-NBA team nomination in 2017 .
High school and college
John Wall attended the Word of God Christian Academy , a private high school in Raleigh , North Carolina , which is considered very Christian . In the guard position he was the best player of his class and accordingly he moved to the prestigious College University of Kentucky in 2009 to play under coach John Calipari . One of his teammates became DeMarcus cousins , with whom Wall formed a quick-witted duo. In his first game he led the Wildcats with 19 points and converted the game-winning throw 5 seconds before the end. In numerous other games, he demonstrated his great potential and won numerous awards. However, it was not enough for participation in the Final Four. During his first and only year, Wall scored 16.6 points, 6.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game.
NBA career
After the season, he left university and was selected number one by the Washington Wizards in the 2010 NBA Draft . There he doesn't play with the number 11 as he did in college, but with the 2, since the number 11 has already been banned from the Wizards for Elvin Hayes and is therefore no longer awarded. In 2010 he took part in the NBA Summer League. There he made an average of 23.5 points, 7.8 assists and 4 rebounds. In his sixth NBA game, he scored a triple-double . He is the third youngest player in NBA history to score a triple double.
On February 19, 2011, Wall took part in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge 2011 as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend, which the rookies won with 148: 140, and was voted MVP of the game thanks to his 22 assists .
For his playful performance in his first year as a professional, Wall was named to the 2011 NBA All-Rookie First Team , as well as second in the election for the NBA Rookie of the Year Award behind Blake Griffin .
In his sophomore year, Wall started in all 66 games for the Wizards. However, there was no performance explosion, and its statistical values stagnated. Nevertheless, Wall was invited to the Rising Stars Challenge .
Due to a knee injury, Wall suspended some games at the beginning of the 2012-2013 season. On March 22nd against the Los Angeles Lakers , Wall distributed 16 assists, setting a career record. Three days later, he set another career record with 47 points in the win against the Memphis Grizzlies . He closed the season with 18.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 7.6 assists per game.
On July 31, 2013, Wall extended his contract with the Wizards for five years. He is said to earn 80 million US dollars. In 2014, John Wall was invited to the NBA All-Star Game for the first time . As part of the NBA All-Star Weekend 2014, Wall won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest . With the Wizards, he was able to qualify for the play-offs for the first time in 2014 , where they failed in the semifinals at the Indiana Pacers . In 2015 Wall was invited to the NBA All-Star Game for the second time. Despite the fact that Wall played his best season individually with almost 20 points and 10 assists on average, the Wizards could not qualify for the 2016 playoffs.
On December 6, 2016, Wall scored a career record of 52 points against the Orlando Magic . However, the game was lost by the Wizards. A few days later he became the franchise leader in steals after getting 7 steals against the Charlotte Hornets . His fourth All-Star nomination followed in February. Wall led, despite operations on both knees in the offseason, the Wizards with career highs in points and assists as well as steals to fourth place in the conference and thus also in the playoffs. This season he also qualified for the All-NBA third team.
In his eighth season he had to sit out some games due to knee problems and could not build on his performance from the previous year. Due to a knee operation, he could not participate in the NBA All-Star Game. However, he returned in March and led the Wizards to the playoffs. In the following season, Wall completed only 32 season games before injuring his left heel. After the operation on the heel, Wall first suffered an infection at the operated site. Treatment for the infection revealed a rupture of the Achilles tendon that Wall sustained in a fall in his home.
