Also in June, Bonga was invited to the Top 100 Camp , an NBA screening event in the United States. In September of the same year he was nominated as one of the most hopeful talents of his year in Europe for the “Basketball without Borders Camp” in Helsinki.

On the first day of the Bundesliga season 2016/17, Bonga made his debut in the top German division for Frankfurt in a duel with Bamberg. In February 2017, he was invited to the “Basketball without Borders Camp” in New Orleans to compete against talent from all over the world. Following the 2016/17 season, he was named ProB's “League Newcomer of the Year” by the internet service eurobasket.com , having scored an average of 10.5 points and 6.2 rebounds in the third-highest German league in 21 appearances for the Frankfurt youth development team as well as four basket templates. For the Bundesliga team of the Skyliners, Bonga made 15 appearances (points average: 1.4) during the 2016/17 season. In the course of the 2017/18 season, Bonga was used by the Frankfurt team in 33 Bundesliga games, scoring an average of six points per game.

NBA

In April 2018, he signed up for the NBA draft process . There the Los Angeles Lakers secured the rights to Bonga in the second selection round in 39th place. The Philadelphia 76ers had given the right to vote in advance to the Lakers and in return received a second-round selection right for the 2019 draft as well as a sum of money.

In July 2018, Bonga signed a three-year entry contract with partial guarantees with the Los Angeles Lakers, where another German player was already under contract with Moritz Wagner . His previous club, the Frankfurt Skyliners, received a transfer fee of 650,000 euros. Bonga was used by Los Angeles in preparation games, but was moved to the squad of the South Bay Lakers training team in the NBA G-League on October 22, 2018 . On his debut for the South Bay Lakers at the beginning of November 2018, Bonga was the best scorer of his team with 27 points and 29 minutes of play, and in the 106: 108 defeat against the Stockton Kings he had nine rebounds and three assists. In the summer break of 2019, the Lakers Bonga and other players gave according to media reports as part of an extensive swap and the commitment of Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards .

National team

In the summer of 2014, Bonga took part in the European Championship in Latvia with the German U16 national team, and in the following year he represented the selection of the German Basketball Federation in the same age group at the European Championships in Lithuania. On February 23, 2018, he made his debut in the DBB selection in the World Cup qualifier against Serbia, making him the youngest debutant in the German national team in the past 40 years at the age of 18 years and three months.

Play style

A distinctive feature of bongas is its height, which is above average for a playmaker. He has his strengths in switching from defense to attack, where he attracts attention with fluid movements. Bonga has a strong urge to the basket, locks itself in such scenes or places the ball on better placed teammates. He uses his height against smaller opponents, in defense he benefits from his long arms to intercept opposing passes and he also uses his physical advantages to block throws. His distance throw is considered a weak point.

Personal

Bonga's parents emigrated to Germany from the Democratic Republic of the Congo . He was born in Neuwied Hospital and grew up in the Koblenz district of Lützel . His older brother Tarsis Bonga played soccer in the youth team at Bayer 04 Leverkusen , then moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf's U23 team and now plays in the third division for Chemnitzer FC .

Isaac Bonga dropped out of school after eleventh grade to focus on his basketball career.
