Player career

Brooks first played college basketball for the Texas Christian University team for a year and then spent a season at the small community college San Joaquin Delta College in California. He spent his third and fourth years of college at the University of California, Irvine , where he averaged 23.8 points per game in the senior year. In 2001 he was inducted into the university's Hall of Fame .

After he had not selected an NBA club in the 1987 NBA draft , Brooks joined the Albany Patroons, coached by Bill Musselman , in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). The Patroons won the championship title and Brooks was elected to the all-rookie team . He then played briefly for the Fresno Flames in the World Basketball League before he got his first NBA contract with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1988 . In the first season, the 1.80 m tall Brooks was there second point guard behind Maurice Cheeks .

Brooks was a backup point guard for a total of ten seasons - he only played 7 of his 680 regular season games from the start - in the NBA. The Sixers were followed by the Minnesota Timberwolves (1990-1992), Houston Rockets (1992-1995), Dallas Mavericks (1995-1996), New York Knicks (1996-1997) and the Cleveland Cavaliers (1997-1998). With an average playing time of 13.6 minutes, he achieved an average of 4.9 points and 2.4 assists during his NBA career. He reached the play-offs six times with his teams . The greatest success was winning the championship with the Rockets in the 1993/94 season , but Brooks was only used in 5 of the 23 playoff games.

Coaching career

In the 2000/01 season Brooks was a player and assistant coach of the Los Angeles Stars in the ABA . The following season he worked in the ABA as head coach at the Southern California Surf and led the team to a season result of 23 wins and 14 losses.

After holding positions as assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets (2003-2006) and Sacramento Kings (2006-2007), Brooks became assistant coach of PJ Carlesimo at the Seattle SuperSonics in 2007 . In the 2008/09 season, the freshly launched after Oklahoma City relocated franchise with just one win from 13 games, so coach Carlesimo was fired. Brooks took over as interim coach and led the Thunder, which in the meantime even had a balance of 3 to 29, with 22 wins against 47 defeats to a season balance of 23 to 59.

In the following season , the first full season under his leadership, the team reached eighth place in the Western Conference with 50 wins and 32 defeats and thus made it into the play-offs. The increase of 27 wins over the previous season was the eighth best such performance increase in the history of the NBA. Having formed a playoff participant from the team, which was still far behind in the previous year, brought Brooks the award as coach of the year . The end in the play-offs came in the first round against the Los Angeles Lakers , where Oklahoma City lost 4-2 to the eventual champions.

The 2010/11 season ended the Oklahoma City Thunder with a record of 55 to 27 in fourth place in the Western Conference. In the playoffs, the team prevailed 4: 1 against the Denver Nuggets and 4: 3 against the Memphis Grizzlies , before being eliminated in the conference final with 1: 4 against eventual champions Dallas Mavericks .

In the 2011/12 season , Brooks was appointed coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, which was leading the Western Conference at that time, for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game to coach the Western selection.

After the Thunder missed the playoffs in the 2014/15 season , Brooks was relieved of his duties as head coach at the end of the season and replaced by Billy Donovan .

For the 2016/17 season Brooks became the new head coach of the Washington Wizards , who had previously separated from their previous head coach Randy Wittman . With the team from the capital, Brooks received a contract until 2021.
