Career
After graduating from Pomona College , Budenholzer played professional basketball in Denmark for a year . At the same time, he was in charge of the Vejle BK 's youth basketball team . He then ended his career and was initially hired by the San Antonio Spurs as a video coordinator. From 1996, he was brought into the coaching staff by lane trainer Gregg Popovich as assistant coach and then filled this position for 17 years. He won four championships with the Spurs.
In the summer of 2013 he was poached by the Atlanta Hawks as the new head coach. In his debut season he qualified with the Hawks for the playoffs, where they were eliminated in eighth place against the Indiana Pacers . In the 2014/15 season he achieved the best record in the Eastern Conference with the Hawks . For this achievement he was honored with the NBA Coach of the Year Award . In the playoffs, however, they were eliminated against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the conference finals.
After the first season of a long-term rebuilding of the Hawks, which ended in 2018 with 24 wins and 58 losses in last place in the Eastern Conference, the club and Budenholzer agreed to prematurely terminate the existing contractual relationship in summer 2018. In its total of five years at the Hawks Budenholzer was able to record a record of 230 wins and 219 losses.
In May 2018, Budenholzer was introduced as the new head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks , which had previously failed in the first round of the playoffs 3-4 at the Boston Celtics . In the 2018/19 season he achieved the best record in the league with the Bucks. For this achievement he received the Coach of the Year Award for the second time in his career . In August 2020, Budenholzer (together with competitor Billy Donovan from Oklahoma City Thunder ) received the award for the third time. So far, only Pat Riley , Gregg Popovich and Don Nelson have received three awards.
