George Matthew Karl (born May 12, 1951 in Penn Hills , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American basketball coach and player. As head coach , he was active in the NBA for a long time . In 2013 he won the NBA Coach of the Year Award .

Stations as a player

After his time at the University of North Carolina , Karl was drafted 66th by the New York Knicks in 1973 . However, he immediately moved to the American Basketball Association team San Antonio Spurs . In 1976, Karl joined the Spurs in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In 1978 Karl's career as a basketball player ended.

Stations as a trainer

After his active career, Karl became a trainer with the CBA team Montana Golden Nuggets. In 1981 and 1983 he reached the finals with the Golden Nuggets and was named coach of the year in both years. In 1984 he got the chance to work as head coach in the NBA for the Cleveland Cavaliers. After he was released there in 1986, he was hired by the Golden State Warriors.

After a successful first season, he was released after a bad start to the 1987-88 season. Karl trained a CBA team again with the Albany Patroons and was named Trainer of the Year for the third time in 1989. In the 1989–90 and 1991–92 seasons he coached the Spanish record champions Real Madrid. Karl returned to the NBA during the current season in 1992. In the seven seasons at the Seattle SuperSonics, his team always reached the play-offs. With the Sonics, Karl won the title in the Northwest Division several times . In 1996, the Sonics lost 2: 4 games to the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Finals .

In 1998 Karl moved to the Milwaukee Bucks. There he built a powerful team that reached the Conference Finals in 2001. The Bucks lost to the Philadelphia 76ers after seven games . The next seasons at the Bucks, however, were disappointing. In 2002 Karl coached the US selection at the Basketball World Cup in Indianapolis, where the host and favorite failed in the quarterfinals.

In 2003 the Bucks fired their head coach. Karl then worked as an expert at a sports broadcaster. In January 2005 he was introduced to the Denver Nuggets as the new head coach. With a series of 32: 8 wins, the Nuggets surprisingly reached the postseason. Under his direction, the Nuggets reached the play-offs every year and only failed in the Conference Finals in 2009 against the later NBA champions LA Lakers .

On December 11, 2010, George Karl became the seventh coach in NBA history with the Denver Nuggets to claim 1,000 wins or more.

Karl received the NBA Coach of the Year Award for the performance of his team during the 2012/2013 season . However, he was dismissed shortly thereafter, as the Nuggets were eliminated in the first round of the play-offs against the Golden State Warriors .

After a long hiatus, Karl returned to the NBA as a coach in February 2015 and signed a 4-year contract with the Sacramento Kings . He replaced Tyrone Corbin there, who previously worked as an interim coach for the Kings. At the end of the 2015/2016 season, which again ended outside the play-offs for the Kings, the Kings announced the separation from George Karl.
