It was founded on March 8, 1931 and has so far celebrated numerous national and international successes. With eight wins in the European Cup , two in the ULEB Euroleague , four in the European Cup Winners' Competition , one each in the Korać Cup and one in the ULEB Eurocup , Real Madrid is the most successful club on the continent. The club is also at the top in Spain with 35 titles in the Spanish championship and 28 cup wins. Just like the soccer team, the basketball department has never been relegated from the top division. Apart from the Madrilenians, only Joventut and local rivals CB Estudiantes can claim that in the Spanish league .

history

Early years (1931–1952)

Ángel Cabrera is considered to be the pioneer of basketball in Castile and Real Madrid . He, who was involved in the founding of several clubs in the 1920s, got in touch with the President of Real Madrid Luis Usera and club secretary Pablo Hernández Coronado to create a section of the sport, which is quite new in Spain. On March 8, 1931, the following advertisement appeared in the daily newspaper ABC :

«El Real Madrid ruega a todos los señores interesados en la práctica de este deporte (basketball) pasen por la Secretaría del Club, Caballero de Gracia, 15, para recibir instrucciones con respecto al partido de la selección y entrenamiento que se jugará el próximo domingo , a las diez de la mañana, against the Instituto Escuela »

"Real Madrid asks all gentlemen interested in the practice of this sport (basketball) to come to the club's secretariat, Caballero de Gracia, 15, for instructions on the selection game and training that next Sunday at 10 a.m. against Instituto Escuela takes place to receive. "

- Ángel Cabrera : Advertisement in the daily ABC, March 8, 1931

On Sunday, March 15, 1931, the team played their first friendly against Instituto Escuela . The first official meeting finally took place on March 22, 1931 in the course of the Castilian championship against dumping BBC and ended with a 5:19 defeat. The team ended the tournament in third place. The first title success came in 1933, when Real Madrid was able to prevail in the Castilian championship against their great rivals of earlier times, Rayo Club de Madrid , with 22:16. In the same year they reached the first final of the Spanish Cup against the same opponent , but lost with 11:21.

After the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) the club reached the final of the Spanish Cup three more times, but in 1944, 1948 and 1949 they failed again against Laietà BC, Joventut Badalona and FC Barcelona . The first success in what was then the most important tournament in Spain was finally achieved in 1951 with a 47:36 against FC Barcelona and was repeated in 1952 with a final victory over Joventut de Badalona .

Golden era under Raimundo Saporta and Pedro Ferrándiz (1952–1975)

Real Madrid in a game against Maccabi Tel Aviv (1975).

The signing of Raimundo Saporta is considered a significant event in the history of Real Madrid's basketball section . At the request of the then club president Santiago Bernabéu in 1952, he was initially recommended as an advisor to the Spanish association and from 1953 he joined the club as a functionary. Saporta played a major role in the founding of the Spanish Basketball League , which was first played in 1957. Real Madrid won the competition straight away and were able to defend the title in 1958. Under Saporta's leadership, the club also hired the young basketball coach Pedro Ferrándiz in 1955 . After two seasons with the club's youngsters and two more years as head coach of CD Hesperia , he took over the first team from Real Madrid in the 1959/60 season and should shape the club into one of the most successful on the continent. In addition to the supremacy in the domestic league, Real Madrid won all championship titles from 1959 until Ferrándiz 'departure as coach in 1975, with the exception of the 1966/67 season, the team was also able to break the dominance of the teams from the Soviet Union in the European Cup . In the season 1961/62, the "Royal" reached the final as the first team from outside the Eastern Bloc , but were defeated there by BK Dinamo Tbilisi with 90:83. After another final defeat the following year against PBK CSKA Moscow , the breakthrough finally came in the 1963/64 season, Real Madrid prevailed against the representative of Czechoslovakia BC Brno and conquered the highest European competition for the first time. The team was able to successfully defend the title in 1964/65 against CSKA Moscow, in 1966/67 and 1967/68 there were two more triumphs in the European Cup against Olimpia Milano and BC Brno and in 1968/69 the team only failed in the final at CSKA Moscow. The main players of the era in which Real Madrid rose to become the most successful basketball club in Europe were, among others, the American Wayne Hightower , who was signed by Coach Ferrándiz at a young age , but who moved to the NBA after the 1961/62 season, Clifford Luyk , Wayne Brabender or Miles Aiken , as well as the Spaniards Emiliano Rodríguez , Lolo Sainz or Carlos Sevillano .

The fifth title in the European Cup was to follow in 1973/74. In addition to Brabender and Luyk, Walter Szczerbiak , another American, had joined the team. The game was driven by the young point guard from his own youth Juan Antonio Corbalán , who, together with his compatriots Rafael Rullán , Vicente Ramos and Carmelo Cabrera, made the club's success story should continue.

In total, Real Madrid, under the leadership of Pedro Ferrándiz as coach and sports director, won 15 Spanish championships, 13 cup wins and five triumphs in the European Cup.

Successes under Lolo Sainz (1975-1989)

In 1975, the former player and assistant coach replaced Lolo Sainz Ferrándiz as head coach. His first international success was winning the 1976 Intercontinental Cup , a tournament that Real Madrid would win three times in a row. In the 1977/78 season succeeded by a 75:67 in the final against Pallacanestro Varese the sixth victory in the European Cup. Man of the game was Walter Szczerbiak, who contributed 26 points. This should be the last season of star center Clifford Luyk in the ranks of the "Royal" . Only two years later, in the 1979/80 season, the team won the highest European competition for the seventh time. Opponent in the final this time was Maccabi Tel Aviv , who could be defeated with 89:85. The best man on the Spanish side was Rafael Rullán with 27 points.

Another international title followed in 1981 with the victory at the Basketball Club World Cup . With successes in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1983/84 and 1988/89 and in the Korac Cup in 1987/88 , the club was able to consolidate its position as the most successful team on the continent. In national competitions under coach Lolo Sainz, Real Madrid won eight league titles, four cup wins and one Supercup in 14 seasons until his departure in 1989 , but from 1986 onwards the supremacy in Spain was increasingly lost to FC Barcelona and Joventut Badalona. Besides Szczerbiak, Brabender, Luyk, Corbalán and Rullán, Fernando Romay , Fernando Martín , Dražen Dalipagić , Mirza Delibašić , Juanma Iturriaga or the later NBA player Dražen Petrović are to be mentioned as outstanding players of that time .

Growing national competition and eighth European Cup victory (1989–1997)

In addition to arch-rivals FC Barcelona, which gradually developed into the dominant club in Spanish basketball from the mid-1980s, and Joventut Badalona, another traditional club that won two championship titles as early as the 1960s and 1970s, other Spanish basketball clubs increasingly managed to compete Put teams together and compete with the two major clubs for the national and international trophies. Particularly noteworthy are Tau Vitoria , Unicaja Málaga , Valencia Basket Club or, during the late 1990s, Bàsquet Manresa .

The first season after the Lolo Sainz era, in which George Karl, a top coach with NBA experience, took over the team, was overshadowed by the tragic death of team captain and crowd favorite Fernando Martín . The center , who was considered the best Spanish player at the time, was killed in a car accident on December 3, 1989. The team finished the league only in third place and failed in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup to Virtus Bologna .

After another untitled season with ex-player Wayne Brabender as head coach, the starting signal for a very successful era followed in 1991. The season began with George Karl in the dugout, but before the end of the season he moved to the Seattle SuperSonics and had to be replaced by Clifford Luyk . The team only finished the championship as runner-up, but in the FIBA European Cup Real Madrid beat PAOK Thessaloniki 65:63 and conquered the second-highest continental competition for the third time. Led by players like Arvydas Sabonis , José Biriukov , José Miguel Antúnez , Joe Arlauckas or Rimas Kurtinaitis , the team rose to its old size, celebrated winning the championship in 1992/93 and 1993/94 and also won the Spanish Cup in 1993 .

The high point of that era was to be the 1994/95 season. Although the team coached by Željko Obradović only finished the championship in third place, Real Madrid, led by star center Arvydas Sabonis, beat Olympiacos Piraeus 73:61 to win the eighth time in the most important European championship Conquer trophy.

The return to the continental throne was followed by a roster. With Sabonis, who switched to the Portland Trail Blazers , Kurtinaitis or Biriukov, some greats left the club. Power forward Joe Arlauckas stayed and formed a powerful squad alongside new signings such as Dejan Bodiroga , Alberto Herreros , Alberto Angulo , Pablo Laso and Juan Antonio Orenga , which finally won the FIBA for the fourth time in 1996/97 with a 78:64 against Mash Verona Could win the Eurocup .

European dry spell (1997-2006)

This international success was to be followed by a long dry spell. The departure of start coach Obradović and players like Arlauckas and Mike Smith could not be compensated. After two untitled years, Real Madrid finally won their 28th championship title in 1999/2000, led by Aleksandar Đorđević and Alberto Angulo and with Sergio Scariolo as coach, with a 3-2 win in the final play-off against arch-rivals FC Barcelona.

The 2002/03 season was a sporting low point. The team only reached 10th place in the championship, the worst placement in the club's history, and thus did not take part in the play-off for the title for the first time. In the 2003/04 season, Real Madrid made it into the final of an international competition for the first time since 1997 in the ULEB Cup . However, the team surprisingly lost this 72:83 against Hapoel Jerusalem .

Under coach Božidar Maljković , an emotional success was achieved in the 2004/05 season after five weak years. The team around Felipe Reyes , Louis Bullock , Axel Hervelle and Mickaël Gelabale reached the championship final against Tau Vitoria and won the decisive fifth away game in the Fernando Buesa Arena with 70:69, with the home team only 42 seconds from the end 61:69 clearly in the lead and already seemed to be a sure master. In a furious race to catch up, Real Madrid came within a few seconds through a three-point goal from Gelabale, a lay-up from Justin Hamilton and a converted free throw from Moustapha Sonko to 67:69. The winning three-point goal was used shortly before the final siren by team captain Alberto Herreros , who also played his last season as an active player.

A disappointing 2005/06 season, with Real Madrid only finishing sixth in the championship, ended the Maljković era. His former assistant coach, Joan Plaza, succeeded him .

Double under Plaza and Messina's failure (2006-2011)

Joan Plaza was able to form a compact team straight away, which won the 30th Spanish championship in club history with a 3-1 win in the final series against FC Barcelona in the 2006/07 season. In addition, the ULEB Cup achieved the first international success in ten years with an 87:75 in the final against Lietuvos rytas . In addition to captain Felipe Reyes and Louis Bullock , the returnees Raül López and Alex Mumbrú as well as shooting guard Charles Smith and point guard Kerem Tunçeri also impressed the team . Also in 2007/08, the team started strong, finished the basic round of the championship in first place, but was then completely surprisingly eliminated in the quarter-final play-off against eighth-placed Unicaja Málaga . After another year without a title, Coach Plaza's contract was not renewed.

In the summer of 2009, Real Madrid signed Ettore Messina, one of the most renowned coaches on the continent, and also underwent a profound squad restructuring. Only four players, including Reyes, Bullock and the young talent Sergio Llull , were retained, while Jorge Garbajosa , Pablo Prigioni , Darjuš Lavrinovič , Novica Veličković , Travis Hansen and Rimantas Kaukėnas some well-known basketball players were signed. The sporting goal was not only the Spanish championship, but also to become a title contender in the ULEB Euroleague again. However, Messina could not follow on from his great successes at Virtus Bologna and CSKA Moscow . In the cup, his team failed twice in a row in the final and in the championship Real Madrid did not get past the semi-finals. Before the end of the 2010/11 season, Messina, who was said to have had a bad relationship with several players, surprisingly left the club and left his assistant coach Emanuele Molin the post. Real Madrid reached the Final Four of the Euroleague this year for the first time in 15 years , but only finished fourth after major defeats against Maccabi Tel Aviv and Montepaschi Siena . The Messina project, which was linked with many hopes and great goals, had failed.

Three Euroleague Finals in a row and Triple Crown 2015 (since 2011)

In the summer of 2011, Real Madrid signed a rather inexperienced coach, the former club player Pablo Laso . His fast and attack-oriented game was able to inspire the audience straight away and Real Madrid have long been at eye level again in the duels against arch rivals FC Barcelona. His first success was winning the Spanish Cup in 2012, a title the club hadn't won in 19 years. In the final, the team defeated arch rivals from Barcelona 91:74. In the championship, too, the team made it to the finals, where title favorite Barça retaliated 3-2 to Real Madrid in a gripping series.

In the 2012/13 season, the duels between the two big clubs for supremacy in Spain continued. At the beginning of the season, the "Royal" won in the final of the Supercup with 95:84 against FC Barcelona. In the Copa del Rey it was the Catalans who won the quarter-finals after two overtimes with 111: 108 and finally took the title. In the Euroleague Real Madrid reached the Final Four again, prevailed there in the semifinals with 74:67 against FC Barcelona and made it into a final of the highest continental competition for the first time in 18 years. There, however, the team failed in a new edition of the final of 1995 with 88: 100 at Olympiacos Piraeus . In the play-off for the Spanish championship, Real Madrid, who had finished the regular season in first place, met again in the final against FC Barcelona and prevailed 3-2 to win their 31st championship title.

In the 2013/14 season, the Madrilenians reached the final of the ULEB Euroleague again . After the team clearly defeated FC Barcelona with 100: 62 in the semi-finals of the Final Four, they lost in the final against Maccabi Tel Aviv with 86:98 after extra time.

In 2014/15 the longed-for triumph in the Euroleague was achieved. In the home hall, the royal team prevailed in the semi-finals of the Final Four against Fenerbahçe Ülker with 96:87 and in the final against Olympiacos Piraeus with 78:59. After eight triumphs in the European Cup, it was the first victory in the ULEB Euroleague. A little later, Real Madrid also won the playoff for the Spanish championship 3-0 against FC Barcelona. The team had already prevailed against their arch-rivals in both the Spanish Cup and the Supercup by winning the final, making it the first team in the history of Spanish basketball to win the four most important titles in one season. For the third time after 1964/65 and 1973/74 Real Madrid won the Triple Crown , consisting of victories in the highest continental as well as in the most important national league and cup competitions in one season.

Venues

Real Madrid versus CSKA Moscow in the Palacio de Deportes (2014).

The Real Madrid basketball team's first venue was under one of the grandstands of the old Estadio de Chamartín . She only had standing room. After the end of the Spanish Civil War, the team moved to the Frontón Recoletos . The hall, which was actually designed for pelota , was the basketball team's first covered arena and offered space for around 2,200 spectators. In 1952 the team moved to the slightly larger Frontón Fiesta Alegre , with a capacity for around 3,500 visitors. Here the team should also celebrate their first two successes in the European Cup.

When the owners of the venue decided in 1965 to demolish the team moved temporarily into Colegio Maravillas before the club on January 6, 1966, the association's own Pabellón de la Ciudad Deportiva on the grounds at the training ground of Real Madrid, Paseo de la Castellana , could inaugurate . This offered space for around 5,000 spectators and was intended to be the home of the basketball section of the “royal” for around 20 years .

Due to the growing public interest, the team left the club's own hall in 1986 and from then on played in the 15,000-seat Palacio de Deportes . In the late 1990s, the Real Madrid basketball team went through a sporting dry spell, which was also reflected in falling audience numbers, whereupon the club decided to return to the club's own hall.

After a year of renovation, during which the team played their home games in the Polideportivo Parque Corredor in Torrejón de Ardoz from 1998 to 1999 , the team moved to the arena, now renamed in Pabellón Raimundo Saporta in honor of Raimundo Saporta , which had a capacity of 5,200 spectators. The sale of the Ciudad Deportiva training area to repay debt led to the demolition of the arena in 2004, which had to give way to the construction site of the Cuatro Torres Business Area .

Since then, the Real Madrid basketball team has played its home games in various sports halls in the city. From 2004 to 2010 they played in the Palacio Vistalegre . In the summer of 2010, the team moved to the newly built Caja Mágica , which, however, was very unpopular with the club's supporters due to its remote location. The club reacted to this in 2011 by switching to the Palacio de Deportes , which was built from scratch in 2005 , while in the Caja Mágica only the home games in the ULEB Euroleague were played until 2012 .
