Mirza Delibašić

Mirza Delibašić (born January 9, 1954 in Tuzla , † December 8, 2001 in Sarajevo ) was a Bosnian basketball player.

Mirza Delibašić "Kinđe" led his club KK Bosna Sarajevo to the title of national champions' cup winners in 1979. After he left KK Bosna, he went to Spain and is considered one of the best players along with Juan Antonio Corbalán , Wayne Brabender , Dražen Petrović and Arvydas Sabonis who have ever played for Real Madrid's “royals” .

Mirza Delibašić won all major titles with the national team of Yugoslavia , including the 1980 Olympic gold medal, three European championships, the 1978 world championship and many titles in European club competitions.

With Dražen Dalipagić , also from what is now Bosnia, he played for the national team and Real Madrid. Their appearance in 1981 in the national championship game against KK Cibona in Zagreb is just one of their many joint career highlights. That evening, Mirza Delibašić scored 33 and Dalipagić 30 points and received standing ovations from the Cibonia fans themselves. In August 1983 he suffered an intracerebral haemorrhage that resulted in the end of his active career.

In 2000, Mirza Delibašić was elected Athlete of the 20th Century in Bosnia and Herzegovina . In 2007 he was one of the first players to be posthumously inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame .

Mirza Delibašić was posthumously honored in May 2008 as one of the fifty great figures in basketball in Europe . The award was given by the Euroleague Basketball in an official ceremony in the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid , in Madrid ( Spain ).
