Clifford "Cliff" Luyk Diem (born June 28, 1941 in Syracuse , New York , United States ) is a former Spanish - American basketball player and coach. The 2.02 meter tall center spent most of his career at Real Madrid and was considered one of the best players in Europe in the 1960s and 1970s.

Clifford Luyk began his career at the University of Florida , for whose basketball team he played for three seasons in the Southeastern Conference . In the summer of 1962, the then 21-year-old was signed by the Spanish club Real Madrid and quickly rose to become one of the most important players in European basketball. With the Madrilenians he was able to break the dominance of the teams from the Soviet Union in the 1963/64 season and win the European Cup for the first time . In total, he achieved six wins with Real in the highest European club competition. He also won 14 Spanish championship titles and ten cup wins . Luyk was especially famous for his hook throw . Due to his numerous successes, he is listed by the Euroleague as one of the 50 most important personalities in European basketball .

National team

Clifford Luyk, who is married to Miss Spain (1966) and Miss Europe (1967) Paquita Torres , took Spanish citizenship in 1968. He played 150 games with the Iberian national team and won the silver medal at the 1973 European Championships .

Trainer

Luyk, who worked as a co-coach and junior coach at Real Madrid from 1983 to 1990, took over the post of head coach at local rivals Atlético de Madrid - Villalba for the first time in the 1990/91 season . After another year at Juver Murcia , he returned to Real Madrid in 1992. With the capital city, he won the championship and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1992 twice in a row . In the 1992/93 season, he also reached the final four of the European Cup.
