The 18th European Basketball Championships the men ( officially: Euro Basket 1973 ) was held from 27 September to 6 October 1973 in Spain instead. For the first time since 1955, the European champion was not called the USSR , which ultimately had to be content with bronze. In the end, the vice-European champion of the last two European Championship tournaments, Yugoslavia , was able to secure the title for the first time in his fifth participation in the finals, silver went to the hosts from Spain .
Venues
The game was played in Barcelona and Badalona .
Preliminary round
The preliminary round was held in two groups of six teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.
The two first and second place winners in each group were set for the semifinals and were already fourth in the European Championship, the two third and fourth placed qualified for the small semifinals and played for EM place 5. The fifth and sixth placed in each group had to play the games to 9th place in the European Championship.
