The 6th European Basketball Championship of Men ( official: Euro Basket 1949 ) was from 15 to 22 May 1949 Cairo instead. In the absence of defending champion USSR and vice-European champion Czechoslovakia , the host and third place in the European Championship in 1947 from Egypt won the gold medal. Silver went to France , Greece won the bronze medal. In addition to Egypt, two other non-European teams, Syria and Lebanon, were part of the EM field due to the lack of their own continental championships.
Final round
Seven teams played against each other in a single group. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. The final table of the group corresponded to the final result of the tournament. The group winner was European champion, silver went to second place, etc.
