The 20th European Basketball Championships the men ( officially: Euro Basket 1977 ) was held from 15 to 24 September 1977 in Belgium instead. Yugoslavia became European champion for the third time in a row , as it did two years ago before its arch-rival from the Soviet Union . The Czechoslovakia , which could inflict their first European Championship defeat in six years in the first round of the Yugoslav selection, won the bronze medal at the end.

Venues

The game was played in Liège and Ostend .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two groups of six teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The two first and second place winners in each group were set for the semifinals and were already fourth in the European Championship, the two third and fourth placed qualified for the small semifinals and played for EM place 5. The fifth and sixth placed in each group had to play the games to 9th place in the European Championship.
