The 28th European Basketball Championships the men ( officially: Euro Basket 1993 ) was from June 22 to July 4, 1993 for the third time in Germany instead. In contrast to the previous tournaments, this time 16 teams took part in the final round. The winner was unexpectedly the host from Germany , who relegated Russia - legal successor to the record title holder USSR - to second place in the final . Euro debutant Croatia , whose players traditionally formed part of the successful Yugoslav national team in the past, won the bronze medal.
Games of preliminary round groups A and C as well as intermediate round group 1 took place in the Europahalle in Karlsruhe , those of preliminary round groups B and D and intermediate round group 2 in the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin . From the quarter-finals onwards, all games were played in the Munich Olympic Hall .
Preliminary round
The preliminary round was held in four groups with four teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.
The first three teams in each group were seeded for the intermediate round and already had 12th place in the European Championship. The remaining four bottom of the group occupied the European Championship places 13 to 16 according to their points achieved. In the event of a tie, the basket quotient decided.

At least fourth place was necessary to qualify for the quarter-finals, which meant at least eighth place in the European Championship. The teams that failed to advance were sorted into EM places 9 to 12 according to the points they scored. In the event of a tie, the basket quotient decided.
