The 8th European Basketball Championship of Men ( official: Euro Basket 1953 ) was held from May 24 to June 4, 1953 in Moscow instead. Host USSR defended its title from 1951, making the Soviet selection the sole record champion with their third EM gold. Silver went to Hungary , France won the bronze medal. In addition to the Israeli team, which is competing in the European continental competition for political reasons , Egypt and Lebanon were also part of the EM field due to the lack of their own continental championships. For the first time, more than 100 points were achieved on average at an EM.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in four groups with five or three four teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The two first and second place winners in each group were set for the semi-finals and were already eighth. The remaining teams played in the placement round for the 9th EM place.

Placement round I

All teams that had missed the first two places to advance in their preliminary group played the 9th to 18th places in two groups. Rank one and two were necessary in order to be able to participate in the games for position 9. The third or fourth place in each group qualified for 13th place in the game, while the fifth and last place in group 2 automatically took 17th place in the overall ranking.
