The 2017 European Basketball Championship for women (officially: Eurobasket Women 2017 ) was the 36th edition of the competition . It took place from June 16 to June 25, 2017 in the Czech Republic and was organized by FIBA Europe .
The number of participants has been reduced from 20 to 16 compared to the last event in 2015 . Spain won the title .
qualification
The qualifying matches were played in the period from November 21, 2015 to November 23, 2016.
The Czech Republic was automatically qualified as host .
Preliminary round
In the preliminary round four teams play against each other in four groups. The winner of a game receives two points, the loser one point. If a game is tied at the end of the regular playing time, extra time takes place.
The groups were drawn on December 9, 2016.

Final round
After the preliminary round, the first in the group qualified for the final round, which was played in knockout mode, while the second and third players in the group determined the other quarter-final participants in a direct duel. Then both the winners of the quarter-finals met in the semifinals, as well as the losers in the "small semifinals". The winners of the semi-finals played the final, the losers the game for 3rd place. The winners of the "small semifinals" played for 5th place, the losers for 7th place.
