The 10th European Basketball Championships the men ( officially: Euro Basket 1957 ) was from 20 to 30 June 1957, Sofia instead. After taking third place at the last European Championship two years earlier, this time the Soviet selection was again at the top of the podium and celebrated their fourth title triumph. Host Bulgaria won the silver medal, Czechoslovakia won bronze.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in four groups with four teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The two first and second place winners in each group were set for the final round and were already eighth. The remaining teams played in the placement rounds for the 9th EM place.

Placement round

All teams that had missed the first two places in their preliminary round group played for 9th place in a single group. This went to the winner of the placement round, whose further order decided on the EM places 10 to 16. The runner-up was automatically tenth in the European Championship, the third-placed placed 11th, etc.

Final round

The two first and second place winners of each preliminary group played in a single group for the European title. This went to the winner of the final round, whose further order decided on the EM places 2 to 8. So the runner-up got EM silver, the third placed EM bronze etc.
