1985 European Basketball Championship

The 25th European Basketball Championships the men ( officially: Euro Basket 1987 ) was from 3 to 14 June 1987 Piraeus instead. European champions became host Greece , which with two defeats in the obviously stronger preliminary group A had been able to prevent the early elimination with great difficulty. With their final win in extra time, the Greeks managed at least a revenge against the defending champions USSR , who narrowly missed another overall victory. Yugoslavia won the bronze medal .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two groups of six teams each in the Stadium of Peace and Friendship . The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The first four teams in each group qualified for the quarter-finals and already had 8th place in the European Championship, the remaining teams played in the final round for 9th place in the European Championship.
