The men's basketball championship 2001 , officially Eurobasket 2001 , took place from August 31 to September 9, 2001 in Turkey . It was the 32nd European Championships. Yugoslavia (or Serbia and Montenegro ) became European champions . Silver went to hosts Turkey and Spain won the bronze medal. Germany finished fourth.
The European Basketball Championship is a biennial basketball competition between European national teams that is organized by Munich- based FIBA Europe , the European Basketball Association.
qualification
A total of 16 teams took part in the tournament, which qualified for the tournament in different ways:
Venues
Ankara
The preliminary round matches for groups A and B took place in Ankara's ASKI Sport Hall . The stadium has space for 8,000 spectators.
Antalya
The group C and D group matches were played in Antalya's Expo Center .
Istanbul
In Istanbul's Abdi İpekçi Arena , the games were played from the quarterfinals. The largest Turkish stadium at the time had a capacity of 11,500 seats.
Preliminary round
In the preliminary round four teams played against each other in four groups. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time.

After the preliminary round, the first team in each group qualified directly for the quarter-finals. The second placed in each group had to play with a third placed from another group for a place in the quarter finals. Then both the winners of the quarter-finals met in the semifinals, as well as the losers in the "small semifinals". The winners of the semi-finals met in the final, the losers in the game for 3rd place. The winners of the "small semifinals" played for 5th place, the losers for 7th place.

The Serbian Peja Stojaković was chosen as the best player of the tournament ( MVP ) . In a total of six games, Stojaković averaged 23 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1 assist and 0 blocks per game. He had a hit rate of 60.5% (49 of 81) from the field and 78.6% (22 of 28) from the free-throw line.
In addition to Stojaković, his teammate Dejan Bodiroga , Turkey's İbrahim Kutluay , Germany's Dirk Nowitzki and Pau Gasol from Spain were all elected to the all-tournament team .
