The Ukrainian national basketball team for men represents Ukraine at international basketball matches.
history
The Ukrainian national basketball team was founded after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992. The most successful national players from Ukraine in the Soviet selection included the Olympic champions Anatolij Polywoda , Serhij Kovalenko , Olexandr Bilostinnyj and Oleksandr Volkov and Volodymyr Tkachenko . In contrast to the Russian national team , which was allowed to take the direct successor to the successful Soviet selection, the Ukrainian selection first had to qualify for participation in final tournaments through preliminary rounds. After missing participation in the European Championship finals in 1995 , they were represented for the first time at the finals of the 1997 European Basketball Championship in Catalonia . After two high defeats at the beginning against the hosts Spain and against Germany , a victory over Croatia was no longer enough to participate in the second round. In the placement round, after two wins, a 13th place was achieved, so that the tournament ended with a positive balance of three wins versus two defeats.
For the following European Championship in 1999 , like four years before, they again missed participation in the finals and thus also the opportunity to qualify for the basketball competition of the 2000 Olympic Games . For the EM 2001 , the qualification for the final tournament was successful, but after a victory over France in the second game, they missed the qualification for the intermediate round in the final group game after a high defeat against the Israeli national team , which thus won the direct comparison . Without a placement round at this tournament in Turkey , the team was classified third from last and 14th place in the final round. At the following European Championship finals in Sweden in 2003 they remained without a win in three group matches. Since the other three bottom of the group also remained without a win, there was another classification on the third from bottom and 14th place in the table. Something similar happened at the European Championship finals in 2005 . After an opening defeat against Russia with a difference of twelve points, two disastrous defeats against Germany and Italy followed, each with a difference of more than 25 points. Ukraine ended up in 16th and last place in the finals. Then twice failed to qualify for the finals of the European basketball championship .
For the finals of the European Championship 2011 they had again missed the qualification, but after increasing the number of participants they slipped into the field of now 24 teams. Two wins over Bulgaria and Belgium were not enough for participation in the intermediate round, as they lost to Georgia by 16 points. As the group penultimate, they were classified in 17th place, although they were in 13th place in the comparative ranking. At the finals of the EM 2013 you are represented again in the field of 24 teams and fight for a first-time qualification for a global finals. At the following European Championship finals in 2015 , you will automatically qualify as a host.
