history

After the local sports clubs SK Azov and SK Azovstal first took part in championship games in basketball at regional and national level after the war, SK Nowator became the leading basketball club in the Mariupol region in the 1970s . The team was led by Valentin Romanets, who was to be a defining personality for basketball in Mariupol in the years that followed. On August 22, 1991, the association, now called Azovmash, was entered in the register of associations as an independent association after Ukrainian independence. Alexander Savchuk has been president of the association and the mechanical engineering group of the same name since 2000 . After two cup triumphs in 2001 and 2002, they won the Ukrainian championship for the first time in 2003, which they successfully defended six times up to 2005. It wasn't until 2011 that the championship title had to be given back to BK Budiwelnik Kiev , with whom they are Ukraine's record champions along with seven championship titles. During this time they won three more national championship and cup doubles in 2006, 2008 and 2009 . In 2007 they reached the final in the third-tier European club competition FIBA EuroCup , which was lost to the Spanish representative and host Akasvasyu Girona . In the 2010/11 season Azovmash reached the semi-finals in the VTB United League which was lost against PBK CSKA Moscow 57:69.
