The VEF is a professional Latvian basketball club from Riga . The name VEF was taken over from the radio manufacturer of the same name VEF ( V alsts E lektrotehniskā F abrika = State Electrotechnical Factory). This company founded the club in 1929. It is the oldest basketball club in Latvia.

history

While belonging to the Soviet Union, the team started in the Soviet championship. VEF was the strongest Latvian basketball team for several decades. The greatest successes during this time were three times a third place in the Soviet championship in 1960, 1961 and 1991. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the club was dissolved in 1992.

The re-establishment took place in 2007. Already in 2009 the promotion to the first division of the Baltic Basketball League was achieved . In the same season, the start in the European EuroChallenge took place . Just one year later, the ULEB Eurocup started . In the same season, VEF reached the final of the BBL for the first time , but it was lost to Zalgiris. In 2011 the Latvian championship was won for the first time. VEF repeated this success in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

VEF currently plays alongside LKL and in VTB.
