Avtodor Saratow ( Russian Автодо́р Саратов ) is a basketball club from Russia . He currently plays (2017/18) in the VTB United League .

history

The club was founded as Spartak in the early 1960s. Later it was renamed Avtodorozhnik Satarow. It was not until 1990 that the team was promoted to the highest league in the USSR. Avtodorozhnik took third place at the very first staging of the Russian championship. Two years later, it even took second place. In the 1990s, Avtodor was the only team in Russia that managed to defy CSKA . In 1997 and 1998, Awtodor, as the team called itself since 1996, even won the regular season of the national championship, but was defeated by CSKA in the play-offs. Since the 1992/93 season, Saratov has been represented in various European cup competitions without interruption for 12 years. The first notable successes were reaching the third round in the Korać Cup in 1992/93 and 1995/96. After Awtodor reached the semi-finals in the FIBA Eurocup in the 1997/98 season , the team even started in the 1998/99 European Cup . However, she did not manage to survive the group stage. Because of the problems with the team's financing and because of the private conflicts with the then governor of Satarow, the long-time president (since 1982) Vladimir Rodionov decided to move the team to St. Petersburg. The entire team and the license have been transferred to Dynamo St. Petersburg. This club only existed for three years and won the FIBA Eurocup under David Blatt as coach . Avtodor Saratov was classified at the beginning of the 2004/05 season in the Russian league system in the Superliga B. After only one year, the club voluntarily rose to the highest league B (4th class). In the 2008/09 season Awtodor played again in the Superliga B and won this. The promotion to the Superliga A (now 2nd class) was waived due to lack of funding. This was followed by three more years in the highest league (3rd class). With the change of governor in Saratov in 2012, the question of financing the club was also reorganized. In the 2012/13 season, Awtodor entered the Superliga A. After winning the Superliga A in the 2013/14 season, Awtodor has been competing in the VTB United League and in various European competitions since the 2014/15 season .
