The Burlington Union Station is a railway station in Burlington (Vermont) .

history

The first station at the current location went into operation in December 1849 as the terminus of the Bellows Falls – Burlington railway line of the Rutland and Burlington Railroad (later the Rutland Railroad ). In May 1860, the first Burlington Union Station was opened at the site of this station when the Vermont Central Railroad (later Central Vermont Railway ) connected its route from Windsor , which originally ended in the north of the city, with Rutland station and the two railway companies to shared the extended station for this purpose.

From 1877, the Burlington and Lamoille Railroad also used the station for the trains to Cambridge Junction, which ran on the route leading south around the city until 1880 and then shared the Central Vermont route to Essex Junction, i.e. left the station to the north. The original route to Cambridge Junction was closed again in 1889.

In 1901, the Rutland Railroad opened the Burlington – Rouses Point line , which branched off the Central Vermont line immediately north of the station. This line was closed in 1963. Since then, Burlington Union Station is no longer a branch station.

As early as 1938, passenger traffic in the direction of Windsor and Cambridge Junction ended, so that only the passenger trains of the Rutland Railroad stopped at the station. The regular passenger traffic in the station was finally set in 1953, when the last trains ran towards Rouses Point and Bellows Falls. As a result, the track systems were dismantled down to the continuous track and the previous track area was used as a parking lot. The platform that exists today was built in 2000, including a platform roof. From December 2000 to February 2003, the station was the terminus of Rutland's Champlain Flyer suburban railway system .

Reception building and current use

The current reception building at 1 Main Street, at the west end of which is located, was built in 1915 from yellow-brown bricks in the Beaux Arts architecture . Today there is no longer any regular train service. The reception building and the platform are still used for tourist trains on the Champlain Valley Flyer of the Green Mountain Scenic Railroad . The nearest Amtrak station is in Essex Junction . From 2017, the Amtrak trains from New York City, which previously ended in Rutland, will run to Burlington, so that the station could then be used again for passenger traffic.
