history

As a first step on the way to the new competition, the VTB United League Promo Cup was held in Moscow in December 2008 as a forerunner . In the final of the Promo-Cup won CSKA Moscow December 22, 2008 against Khimki with 70-66.

The league started its first real season 2009/2010 with clubs from Estonia , Latvia , Lithuania , Russia and Ukraine . In the 2010/2011 season teams from Finland , Poland and Belarus joined them. In the 2011/2012 season, the number of participating teams increased to 18. The teams from the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan were added. For the 2012/2013 season, the number of participants rose to 20 teams.

With the departure of the Ukrainian and Lithuanian clubs in the 2014/15 season, the number of teams was reduced to 16. In the 2015/16 season, BK Vita Tbilisi was the first team from Georgia to join the league. After the withdrawal of the clubs from Georgia, Finland and the Czech Republic for the 2016/17 season, the league shrank to 13 teams. For the 2018/2019 season, the number of participants increased to 14 due to the newcomer Stelmet Zielona Góra from Poland, only to decrease to 13 teams in the following season due to the withdrawal of VEF Riga .
