The Basketball League Belgium is the English-language and general name for the top division in the Belgian men's basketball club . The organizing organization of the closed, professional league bears the same English name in multilingual Belgium, while the league itself is marketed as the Euromillions League with the help of name sponsors . Since 2016, ten teams have belonged to the closed division again.

history

The top division is currently a closed league without promoted and relegated teams and had recently been reduced from ten participating teams to eight due to the withdrawal of licenses for teams like Euphony Bree in 2008 and the withdrawal of the Gent Dragons in 2012. In 2013 there was an increase to ten clubs. Telenet Oostende is the record champion with 18 championships . For a long time, the league was marketed under the name of the Belgian insurance company Ethias , before the national lottery took over as name sponsor in 2014 and the league as the Scooore League for two years ! and has been marketed as the Euromillions League since 2016 .

mode

The teams will play a double round in the round-robin tournament ( English Round Robin ), so that when current number of eight teams, each club 28 games in the regular season has completed. The championship title is then played out in play-offs . In the last two events in 2011 and 2012, the two leading teams had a bye in the first round after regular time, while the teams in places three to six after the main round in a " best-of-three " series had the other two Semi-finalists played off. In the semifinals, the team that won two wins in a maximum of three games won again. The final series for the championship was then held in a " best-of-five " series, in which the team won the title that had won three wins first.

International competitions

The Belgian league has been a member of the Union des Ligues Européennes de Basketball (ULEB) since 1999 . For the main round of the highest European club competition ULEB Euroleague , which has existed since 2000, the Spirou BC Charleroi has qualified four times and the BC Ostend as Telindus Oostende once in 2001. You never got beyond the preliminary round. In the previously existing FIBA Europa League, Racing Basket Mechelen only narrowly failed in 1994 when it made it to the quarter-final play-offs of the eight best teams. In the first years of the European Cup , when only the defending champion and thus only one team from a country were eligible to participate, the Belgian champions regularly reached the round of the best eight teams. In 1969, the Standard Liege basketball team made it into the semi-finals of the four best teams, in which they had no chance against defending champion Real Madrid .

In other European competitions, Racing Mechelen reached the final in the Korać Cup in 1973 and Union Quaregnon-Mons as Dexia Mons-Hainaut the final in the FIBA EuroCup 2007/08 . A title win did not succeed.
